I need to get this set at some point. What do think about Roussel's chamber works, stingo?

Polite might be a good way to reference many of Lobez-Cobos/Cin.SO recordings. But not in a negative way. I have many of their recordings that properly give justice to the music, it also helps that they had a fine group of players, especially Peter Norton on bass-trombone who could really cut through with minimal effort. Their Respighi disc with Church Windows is a fine example.

I've got them variously performing Bruckner (obviously), Shostakovich, and Rakhmaninov, and all recordings are a credit to them.

I suppose one analogy, to underscore that I meant no ill by polite, is a great narrative poem read aloud by three perfectly different actors. The three voices will be completely different, the manner and emphases will vary, but they are all perfectly absorbing experiences, and each voice is true to the poem, in its own element.

Karl, they have a good DSCH 15th, which I must also shine some of the spotlight on Telarc, always offering a fine digital sound. Not sure if you've heard it.

Yes, the First & Fifteenth, and it was probably the first recording I heard of the latter.

Now:

Listening to Symphony No. 3. A great set that's just as rewarding as Deneve's traversal of the symphonies.

Anyone got an answer to this?

Random question for anybody: MusicWeb just got a CD to review, which is called "Bartok: Trumpet Concerto, Trombone Concerto." Is my confusion justified?

Perhaps they meant Rouse, he's the only composer I can think of that has both a trumpet and trombone concerto.

Unless someone recently unearthed previously unpublished works by Bartok, this is a misprint, or the works are transcriptions.

Ah, it is indeed a typo - should be Henri Tomasi.

Volume 3 from Musical Heritage Society pressings.  It took me years to find Volumes 1 and 3, but now both are safely on the shelf. Not always expensive, just was a bugger to find this run on this label.  Now they are all but giving this volume away!

Makes sense in a way.  I always get Bartok and Tomasi mixed up.

They are a 33% match.

Good morning!

Aaah, the fresh smell of a brand new thread...

CD 1 of this set:

Hallé Orchestra, Sir John Barbirolli

I quite like the Barbirolli way with Sibelius, however in terms of sound quality this must be one of the worst sets in my collection.
