O Freunde, nicht diese Töne . . . .

A propos, Karl, how do you like Pletnev in Scarlatti?

From this 16 CD set, CD 5.

Symphony No 5, opus 18.

I am getting more and more into the idiom of this composer, and discover how good he really is. Splendid performance and sound.

This is indeed, my favourite work by Mendelssohn.  The glorious opening and final movements are indeed below the green lemon!!  I feel even that is a vast understatement.  8)

Ray, this recording is the first I have genuinely enjoyed the piece. Thomas Fey is da hobbit man!

I have and really enjoy the set with Ashkenazy, conducting the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin.

"Big band" Mendelssohn hasn't as a rule grabbed me, apart from the Italian and Scottish, which have always been old friends.

Sonata in f major, opus 16, No. 1 which has a ravishing second movement, that lingers on in your mind. Excellent performances and sound. Onslow at its best. Two musicians that match perfectly together.

What a revelation! I really love this disc.

No...it's a ghastly sound  ;D  Listening to another Hob.2 now, this time played on the clavichord. Marginally better...but I do prefer a real piano.

Seriously, I myself do not see the point (beyond academic curiosity) of using technologically inferior instruments and subjecting oneself to various other limitations of the time.
But I understand this is a loaded topic and I'll leave it at that. Perhaps I'll see the light some day.

Yes, the statement was probably winky-worthy, but one could assume that musical instruments evolve to improve.

Thread duty:

DONIZETTI, G.: Concerto for Violin and Cello / String Quartet No. 17
VERDI, G.: String Quartet (arr. for strings)
