Tell us more about this Bruckner-lapping lass, Jens ;)

She's married now, and not to me, either. Good Slovak stock!

Before Presto ends their Helios CDs sale, are there any Helios albums that I Positively Cannot Live Without in a Certain GMG Obsessive Context?

My shopping cart is
Milhaud: Le Carnaval d'Aix, Op. 83b, etc.   (New London Orch, Ronald Corp)
Vivaldi: Concerti con molti istromenti (King's Consort)
Virtuoso Strauss Transcriptions (Piers Lane)
Josef Suk: Piano Quintet & Piano Quartet (Nash Ens)
Demidenko plays Medtner
New London Chamber Choir, Critical Band & James Wood - Janacek's choral music, especially if you have no other recordings of some of the works at the moment.

Thanks Velimir (adding the Martinu) and North Star - curious, I've long wishlisted the Naxos choral album with Czech singers, have you been able to compare these?

You should check Berkshire though as well. If they have what you are looking for, it will be cheaper in the end.

PS: The Liadov is quite good if you'd like to try it out (though you could also 'splurge' for the complete piano works on Brilliant if you want everything). The Maiden's Prayer has an interesting mix of little gems. Grainger: Rambles & Reflections is a personal favorite. Frankly, I could go on for pages - they have a lot of good releases.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

You mean this one, Brian? Haven't heard it before, but, what the heck, it's in Spotify. There seems to be only work that is duplicated, though - The 70.000 (a single work lasting 5 to 6 minutes). The Moravian Teachers do sound more 'Czech', obviously, but the New London Chamber Choir isn't bad at all, at least not to my ears. The Helios disc is a great overview of Janacek's choral music, and won't be redundant after getting all the Supraphon or Naxos recordings.

Oh, is that the only duplicate? I think I was comparing the two discs because The 70.000 is a work I treasure and badly need in my collection!

Yes, it is. I don't know the other works on the Naxos disc, but can say that the Hyperion/Helios is full of only mandatory pieces, like The Wolf's Trail (Vlcí stopa), or Elegy on the death of my daughter Olga.

Interested in the following two sets, but where there are clear counter-recommendations of un-boxed superior performances, those recommendations would be appreciated as well.  (I will be doing some actual footwork in this department later today.)

My first thought, before seeing the images in all their pixelated glory, was "Kiri!"  I have a double CD released in 2010--CD 1 devoted to her Mozart and CD 2 to her Strauss--which include some concert arias, but on inspection only two were included, both recorded with the "Wiener Kammerorchester" conducted by Gyorgy Fischer.  Hopefully they are in that Decca/London set.  Whether or not they are, I suggest getting the double CD I have; there's quite a few obscure arias that don't normally make it onto CDs by big name singers.    The Strauss is excellent--it has to be, it's Kiri!--but mostly full of better known stuff.

But looking up the Amazon image for that one, I found this one, which seems to include all the Mozart performances in the double CD, plus several concert arias not in the double CD--so it's probably more in line with what you're looking for now (unless the Strauss tempts you and it should....)

Sticking to the concert arias, I have this one from Natalie Dessay (there's a couple of re-issues floating around, this is the most recent and the cheapest going by Amazon pricing.

Hello,

Any thoughts on this?

Well, not on their Mendelssohn, but I have their Schumann set and find it very fine.

the 60-disc Vivarte set looks good at $91.92 (+6% HST) and p&p free for me, are there better offers?

Thanks Daverz.  ArkivMusic has it as a weekend special for $8.99.

Hello,

Any thoughts on this?

It was an important and notable release in its day... and it holds up quite nicely, to be sure. But it's also been surpassed,  since, though. (Many times over, I dare say.)

Thank you very much Jens, I shall reconsider.

In line with my previous inquiry about the Decca and Brilliant box sets of concert arias, I am considering this large collection of vocal music from the Philips COMPLETE MOZART collection:

I know, I know...."chill with box set".  Just asking in case the hit-to-miss is remarkably good.  I see two discs of Elly Ameling, and that sounds appetizing.  Here is an Amazon review of the old, 8-disc edition from Bernard O'Hanlon, who is particular and quite opinionated (who isn't?), just as a point of reference; I'd be curious if any of the GMG Mozarteans take sharp exception to his personal tastes in these singers.

Also, he mentions that the old edition includes texts; does anyone know if the ~2006 10cd edition, pictured above, also includes texts?

I quite liked that CD, I'm glad to have it, but I much prefer Thomas Binkley and Andrea Ramm with the Studio der Frûhen Musik, not least because of Ramm. I don't love That Orlando Consort Machaut Cd as much as their CD of Josquin motets.
