It was an important and notable release in its day... and it holds up quite nicely, to be sure. But it's also been surpassed,  since, though. (Many times over, I dare say.)

"in its day"?  These are recordings from the early 90s, not the 40s.

20 years... hey, that's a long time in my universe. When Poppen was still playing string quartets instead of playing conductor...?!  ;)

I quite liked that CD, I'm glad to have it, but I much prefer Thomas Binkley and Andrea Ramm with the Studio der Frûhen Musik, not least because of Ramm. I don't love That Orlando Consort Machaut Cd as much as their CD or Josquin motets.
Ah, Andrea von Ramm, my favorite early music singer!

In line with my previous inquiry about the Decca and Brilliant box sets of concert arias, I am considering this large collection of vocal music from the Philips COMPLETE MOZART collection:

I know, I know...."chill with box set".  Just asking in case the hit-to-miss is remarkably good.  I see two discs of Elly Ameling, and that sounds appetizing.  Here is an Amazon review of the old, 8-disc edition from Bernard O'Hanlon, who is particular and quite opinionated (who isn't?), just as a point of reference; I'd be curious if any of the GMG Mozarteans take sharp exception to his personal tastes in these singers.

Also, he mentions that the old edition includes texts; does anyone know if the ~2006 10cd edition, pictured above, also includes texts?

I have the Masses/Litanies and Oratorios/Cantatas/Masonic Music boxes from the 2006 series; they have well written liner notes but no texts.    Your best bet (if you go through with this set) is the older version, both bcause of the texts and because the used copies are at least twenty dollars cheaper.

As to the quality of the recordings--sorry, can't help you there.

Do you know if the Binkley/Ramm/EMI has been reissued in some form recently?  I see the old EMI/Reflexe single disc as an expensive used option, but that's it.  ASIN: B00004SLHT  (cheaper via Amazon DE)
I am glad you mentioned the Studio fur Fruhen Musik, because I just ran across a cheap deal on their MUSIC FROM THE MIDDLE AGES, which I'd wanted for a while.

Thanks for that reply, Jeffrey.  I am torn, because I see that the newer edition's extra couple (9 & 10) discs are Elly Ameling!   :-X  But perhaps I can find those recordings of hers elsewhere.

While all Studio der frühen Musik, München´s Telefunken recordings have been rereleased on CD except one double LP (antology for Swedish Telefunken), this does not hold true for their later EMI recordings. However most of them have been rereleased on CD (Reflexe series). Both their Machault CD´s were rereleased in the Reflexe CD series, but I am not aware of any later reissue.

Thanks very much for that info, premont.

A kind of silly question: I am interested in getting Beecham's famous Rimsky-Korsakov SCHEHERAZADE (EMI) [below], but just in case I am missing something, was it ever (recently) included in a larger anthology of Beecham (or other) recordings, or in a better-sounding edition?  I did a little hunting and did not see any better way to acquire this than the ~2008 GROC-series edition below:

I'm pretty sure that's the latest EMI remastering.  EMI has been issuing SACDs of late, particularly in Japan, so it might show up that way eventually.

Thanks for that help, Daverz; I ordered it just after reading your comment.  Can't wait!

One more trivial "editions" question, for anyone who might know: were the entire contents of the following Jessye Norman disc of Berg songs ever duplicated as part of another collection, and/or is there a preferable edition to the following?  The fact that this one is still available is probably my answer....

A. Berg
Seven Early Songs, 5 Altenberg L. op.4, Jugendlieder
DG

I think it's all included in Sony's "Boulez conducts Berg" set. But I don't see a reason why the box is necessarily better (without liner notes and such) than the individual disc.
Either way: gorgeously done!

A. Berg
Boulez et al.
Lulu-Suite, Der Wein, Lyric Suite, Chamber Cto., 3 Orch.P. op.6,
Seven Early Songs, 5 Altenberg L. op.4, Jugendlieder,
Wozzeck

This probably barely needs mentioning; the only real complaint that I've heard is that another ~disc should have been added to mop up a couple-few items that were inexplicably not included in this box.

Szell: I ain't fearin' his Einführung

I was hesitating, because I didn't want the big ~49cd Szell box to come out in a EuroAmerican edition in 6 months and include all these concertos.  However, from the Amazon Classical Forum, someone mentions:
QuoteThe Szell box consists of the Beethoven and Mozart Original Jacket boxes that were issued years ago - sans the non-Szell items; Schumann Symphonies, Brahms Symphonies, Overtures and Haydn Variations; Bruckner 3, 7 (Vienna Philharmonic) and 8; Bartok and Janacek; Rossini overtures; Dvorak 7, 8, & 9 + Slavonic Dances, Schubert 8 & 9; several Haydn Symphonies; a bit of Hindemith; some Walton; Mahler 6 & 10; Stravinsky Firebird; 2 CDs of Richard Strauss; another CD of Strauss waltzes; Tchaikovsky 5 & Capriccio Italian; Wagner without Words; and the 1970 Tokyo concert.
The only concerto recording is Mozart 25 with Fleisher - which will also be part of a complete Fleisher reissue which is coming down the pike.
There is nothing in this set that hasn't been on CD before, and several items that have been on CD (such as Mahler 4, Ravel's Daphnis & Chloe suite, Debussy's La Mer) are not included.

In fact, I think that Fleischer edition box is already listed at Amazon (UK?), though I don't remember there being a cover image yet.

A TRIBUTE TO GUSTAV LEONHARDT (Alpha, 5cd, 2012)
ASIN: B007NM8DB6
(massively zoomable back cover showing covers of the original five single albums)

It took me a while to realize that this contained the William Byrd disc I've recently wanted but thought I'd missed (or missed at a decent price).  Just curious how recommended come the other discs.

All the solo recordings are excellent, listening to the cantata recording now for the first time. Excellent singing, orchestral playing and sound quality so far. Original liner notes aren't included (but you probably can get them as a PDF if you email Outhere)

Indeed... Original means 'new' at Alpha... Some ramblings about Leonhardt and pictures are included in the box sets 'liner notes', and track info. I emailed them about this in December, haven't had time to go on with it.  >:(
