The compulsion party grinds on!

Shost by Jansons; I got a bonus disc of Julie Andrews doing introductions of each of the symphonies ("Oh naughty Party functionaries!  What fun might they be having amongst the hedgerows?")

Podles + Muscovites doing sunny Handel: all's right in the world

Bernstein-Crazy vs. Shost 1/7
i-Deals is selling this 2cd for $6+shipping via Amazon US-MP, fwiw....

Shost vs. Shost
This seems to be OOP but still some copies available new (expensive) and used (cheap) via Amazon-MP.
Got it for the Trio II w/Oistrakh and Sadlo; I decided to take my chance with this instead of the Doremi Oistrakh edition volume, because I'm interested in the filler, Doremi apparently has a reputation for iffy sound (?), and I did like the job Yedang Classics did on a Handel/Richter volume I bought.

She's a man, baby!
I've heard good reports about this all the way around; hat-tip to...I forget, North Star?  Erato?  More than one of you.
The cover is totally bizarre, but also I think her Mona Lisa smile says it all.  "I've got this."

Svetlanov vs. R-K
Thanks Daniel for the Amazon UK bargain alert; this one had been sitting in my cart for ages because I just wasn't quite ready to pay the usual ~$35+ for it.  Now let's hope they honor the order, since we've all flooded them with requests.

At least me, but I try not to look at the cover every time I play this (shudder!).

absolutely gorgeous, this one !!  0:)
Nice to know. Of course it should be, as it was quite a bit more expensive than the 5CD Rimsky set!

Oh, the pleasures of Norway! I have been reluctant to order it, because I would not only have to pay the VAT, but p&p is more than the price of the set.

If you order for more than 20 £, don't you get free P&P within the EU? I bundled it with a couple of other discs.

It's the same for almost everyone outside the UK, i.e. no UK VAT. However, I think Norway taxes anything above, what, 20 Euros? when getting packages from outside.

Quotebut p&p is more than the price of the set.

Yeah, I remember using that argument when the Vernet set of Bach Organ works was available for 25 Euros from JPC: 0.01 for the set, 24.99 shipping. ;D

Around 25 Euros currently. As long as the net price on amazon UK is above 20 £ I get free p&p, and as long as it is below £ 23.5 I get no taxes. Makes for an interesting balancing act but I usually manage!

Not here, it only applies to selected countries. Although we are in the EU, Amazon still treats Czech Republic as a second rate destination. We did not even have access to the marketplace until a year or two ago.

I have yet to listen to Friedmann's version, but I really like Svetlanov. Especially the finale of No. 1 - the faster tempo suits the music in my opinion.

Viz. this . . . I found e-mail in my in box first thing, and a cloud of doubt passed over my heart.  But (once I availed myself of Google translator, which did a surprisingly good job) I found that it was an inessential matter of a slight delay with the shipment.

Sergeant Rock

#395
Arrived this morning: two discs with music of Kats-Chernin (born in 1957, four days after Mrs. Rock); the piece for basset clarinet, Ornamental Air, enthusiastically recommended by Monkey Greg. Also a CD of short works by Kalinnikov, recommended by Fafner.

Sarge
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Cool, Sarge. Where did you get them? I purchased the MP3s from iTunes because they were way cheaper than the hard copies I found. But the MP3s have good quality sound so I'm pleased, and the Collins/Clarinet disc came with the electronic-booklet which was nice.

I've been listening to these two quite a bit the past few days, Wild Swans is growing on me, same with the Piano Concerto. Still completely thrilled with Ornamental Airs, dynamite of a piece.

I got the clarinet disc from JPC (€19.99, free shipping) and Wild Swans from Amazon Kraut (for the odd price of €20.63, free shipping).

Hey, thanks for the heads-up on that ABC Classics disc. I'm gonna co-sign on Ornamental Airs, got to cover it for MusicWeb and really, really enjoyed it. Looking through MusicWeb's archives, Wild Swans and the Piano Concerto were reviewed with a different cover.
