a score for Suk's A Summer Rhapsody, from amazon.ca - recent facsimile slightly reduced in size from a full score but larger than the usual study score size.  Under $Cdn. 30,

That's it I broke down and bought some recordings thus breaking my self-imposed CD purchasing silence:

Got the Kats-Chernin recordings for decent prices: the Wild Swans recording for $15 and the Ornamental Air recording for $12. I've heard of Kats-Chernin for many years but thanks to Monkey Greg's great write-up on her and my own curiosity, I decided to buy those two recordings. FYI, I heard Wild Swans via YouTube and really enjoyed it. I imagine myself getting more enjoyment out of it, however, once I can listen to the recording through my stereo.

John, you held out for much much longer than I expected. You should still feel proud of yourself.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Thanks, Paul. I'm still going to put another silence on myself after this order arrives. I just have better control of myself this time. Little steps at a time.

But you thanked Brain.

Oh, now I see, Brian-Brain. Probably an iPhone auto-correct that I failed to see.

Aye, that auto-correct keeps one on his twos! ; )

The first time I was addressed as Brain, I was 6 years old and it was a letter from Delta Airlines offering me some sort of fly-miles program. I was so happy that they thought I was brainy.

That's the nature of Freudian slips.

HIPster

Pretty nice haul from Amoeba Records in Hollywood last night.

All used discs, total was just under $28.

Special shout-out to the Early Music Club thread!  Thank you.

And then there's this one, a new-ish release by Jozef Van Wissem and Jim Jarmusch.  Van Wissem mainly plays a 13 course swan neck baroque lute.  On first listen, it is most excellent.  On the wonderful Sacred Bones label:

You should let us know how that Scriabin/Svetlanov sounds.  I've still been holding out to buy that or the Muti, if it comes back into print or a cheaper copy becomes available.

Absolutely, Octave. When it comes to sound quality on Svetlanov recordings I'm okay as long as there is decent separation of the instruments and it doesn't sound like it was recorded in a tin can. :)

FYI, the Muti set sounds fantastic and the performances are exemplary.

Behold the squalor!  This time from Arkiv Music, getting a little mileage out of their EMI Encore series sale; not a major discount, but I ended up getting a bunch of hopefully worthy discs for $4 a pop.  My thanks to those who offered me some suggestions.

1. Sibelius: Violin Concerto, Serenades, Humoresque (Ida Haendel w/Berglund/Bournemouth)
2. Rachmaninov: Études-Tableaux, Op 33 & 39  (Ovchinnikov)
3. Rodrigo: Concierto De Aranjuez, Etc (Angel Romero, Andre Previn)
4. Zemlinsky: Symphonien No 1 & 2 (James Conlon)
5. Schmidt: Symphony No 4 (Welser-Möst)
6. Shostakovich: Symphony No 4 & Britten: Sea Interludes (Previn)
7. Liszt: A Faust Symphony (Muti)
8. Liszt: Sonata In B Minor etc. (Agustin Anievas)
9. Janacek: early/ragged SINFONIETTA + Weinberger/Smetana (Charlie Mack)

plus a good deal ($20, Arkiv's 'deal of the day') on major remediation

6. Shostakovich: Symphony No 4 & Britten: Sea Interludes (Previn)

That two-fer is mighty fine; not the perfect account of the Shostakovich Fourth, but a mighty fine effort, and the CSO brass ring out splendidly.
