Kontrapunctus

A 42 disc set of all of his Carnegie Hall performances--some were for his private use, only. There's also a DVD of a televised recital.

And some of those private tapings (going by the three CDs I have) have miserable sonics even by the standards of that era.....

Thanks, good price on that.  Hope to see something similar with Suzuki in the future.

Careful with those Bach bricks, David. ;D

Pope Francis-- Favorite music: "Leonore" Overture No. 3 by Ludwig van Beethoven conducted by the late-Wilhelm Furtwangler, "who, in my opinion, is the best conductor of some of (Beethoven's) symphonies and works by Wagner."

The above three aren't even that big by GMG collector standards!

This one is, however - but on the other hand, I currently have just three (!!) Reiner recordings, all of them concerto accompaniments (Heifetz in Brahms, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky).

And I only have one album by Julian Bream, so this one's a possibility:

Man oh man. You pick seriously thick boxes!!!!

My largest box is Haydn/Fisher (33 discs), followed by Massenet Edition (23), Loewe Songs (21), Haydn/Angeles (21), Haydn Dorati Operas (20), and Steinberg ICON (20). That is all I have from 20 discs or more type boxes (heck, it includes 16 and over).

I have the complete Brahms (60) and complete Rachmaninov (33ish?) from Brilliant, but my biggest box by FAR is the Brilliant Classics 100 CD "Russian Legends" box, which was briefly on sale for only about US $40 back in 2010. I have never regretted it - it's such a gold mine there's still a lot to discover.

The Pope, the German Chancellor, not bad at all for a (supposedly) pirate label.  ;)

George Szell: THE EDITION (Sony, 49cd)
ASIN: B00BANCWSO

I mention this one again because Amazon US customer-reviewer 'Johannes Climacus' posted a fairly extensive review with some comments about inclusions, exclusions, and the physical quality of the set, a couple months ago.  It seems he's reviewing the Korean edition.

As I've mentioned before there seem to be two different (??) editions of this box out now, at least as listed at Importcds.  One seems to be an "Asia" edition, the other a much more expensive "EU" edition.  If anyone has word on any differences, it might be nice to know.  I'm guessing the best policy is to wait for a Euro-American edition to be released, but I wonder if the physical product will be quite as nice as Johannes Climacus says:
QuoteThere may be other incarnations of "Szell: the Edition," but this is the one to get: it is housed in a beautifully designed, and user-friendly, box. Great care has gone into its production: each cardboard sleeve not only provides the usual information, but also has a plastic "inner sleeve" to protect the CD further from the rude shocks of mortal existence.

I am hearing about some exclusions that are disappointing in light of the loose space on some discs.

EDIT: this might have been done before, but here's a contents list of the Sony/Korea edition, per a post at rec.music.classical:

The one I waited too long to get is the Mercury Living Presence 1 Box.

You're in great luck then. They just re-released it this week.  I saw it at my local shop and pounced. I thought it was just a fluke and actually intended to sell it for $450 on ebay, but a little research shows they have brought out another batch. I'm not really disappointed, I LOVE the second one and wanted a copy of the first as well...
It's all good...

And some of those private tapings (going by the three CDs I have) have miserable sonics even by the standards of that era.....

I haven't heard all of this, but so far the audio is SPARKLING.  I'm really impressed (and delighted).

Pope Francis-- Favorite music: "Leonore" Overture No. 3 by Ludwig van Beethoven conducted by the late-Wilhelm Furtwangler, "who, in my opinion, is the best conductor of some of (Beethoven's) symphonies and works by Wagner."

I've dithered about this for a couple of months but eventually realised that as I love Rubinstein so much it would be stupid not to get it when the price (from ImportCDs) was so low. This is now winging its way to Australia.

I want the "Russian Legends" set on Brilliant Classics, which is now going for $299 or so on Amazon--still an excellent price for 100 CDs. However, I thought I read on the forums here that it was previously selling for around $50 or so. I already have 25 of those discs in the "Legendary Russian Pianists" set, but at least 75 or so will be new (minus the ones I bought when I was in Russia in 2007).

I bought it for $50. However, that was in early 2010, so at least 3 and a half years ago. Brilliant Classics has stopped printing new copies of the box. I consider it one of the best CD purchases I've ever made.

Agreed. I've not heard all the discs in the set yet, but each one I have heard has been great.

I came across this "fun" box thread from a few years ago....
*bump*

It was kind of fun to read through the mega box wish list from 2013! I wonder if we now are entering a time of box saturation and overload? Has the demand dropped? Perhaps the companies have discovered that most of us have accumulated a number (too many?) of these "big" boxes over the last few years. At least it seems to be somewhat of a reduced pace in the releases of large box sets (or is that my imagination?). Or is this simply the calm before the storm?

Which mega set do you want in 2015?
