That's the Arriaga: Symphony in D; Vorisek: Symphony in D Mackeras disc recommended from the if you like this then you'll like thread...

That's an excellent disc! I'm usually not one for Classical Era music, but the symphonies on this disc won me over with their vigor and life-affirming spirit. :)

yep, and interestingly I was after more romantic bombastic stuff, but this was mentioned and just clicked.

Have cancelled the pre-orders of Boulez Mahler from Amazon ITA (just in time) and the Mosaiques Set from Amazon FR and reordered from Presto tonight - that's about £27 saved in price and carriage overall (£29 and 31.80 respectively - carriage paid). Might only get the Mosaiques delivered mid November but I can wait :) and that would free some October budget - therefore I may order again in 2013...

Seemed appropriate.

A great book but the classic edition (sadly appears to be oop now) was written by our own Eric, aka The Unrepentant Pelleastrian aka Homo Aestheticus aka Pink Harp:

Those were the days, Sarge !! :) We once had quite a loony bin back then.

Makes the present situation almost seem dull.... :-\ But I guess we luckily tend to remember the hilarious moments and forget the bad parts. 8)

Saint-Saens: SYMPHONIES, VIOLIN CONCERTOS, PIANO CONCERTOS (Brilliant, 6cd)
Martinon (symphs); Hoelscher/Dervaux (vln ctos); Tacchino/deFroment (piano ctos)

Found this very cheap used, got it mainly for the symphonies.  Hopefully the rest will not be dead weight.
It seems that the Tacchino piano concertos were licensed from Vox, whose OOP 3cd edition (ASIN: B000001K6N) includes a disc of stuff not included here....too bad!  I have sights on other recordings of the concertos, anyway.

Some new copies of this ~OOP Brilliant set are still available quite reasonably from Amazon UK(-MP).

I don't know those versions of the piano concerto, but the violin concertos with Hoelscher are excellent (and of course, so is the Martinon).
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Thanks for the reassurance, Neal/Chen; even with bargains it's nice to have a good picture of the work in question.
I've dragged my feet far too long investigating the charms of Saint-Saens' music, considering how much I've come to like the ORGAN SYMPHONY and the Nash Ensemble's 2cd of chamber music.

Likewise Que for mentioning the Van Veen review of the Buxtehude MEMBRA.

Thirded. The Tacchino/deFroment renditions of the piano concertos are also quite good.

I love them. They are quite different from the modern performances Octave will probably acquire at some point.

Just landed:

Nice one Karl,

Mine landed three days ago but was smashed to bits!!! either America UPS or the Royal Mail.  Box split and discs whapped.  I have to send it back to a Freepost address in the UK, who will send it back to the USA and from then I will get a refund.  They can't do a swap out, so I have to purchase another set whilst this set gets refunded.

Its gone up £1.20p since the damaged order!!   Exactly the same packing as yours only no protection with those bubble bags.

Awesome, Anthony! Always great to have another potential Atterbergian. :)

Thanks to "Listener" and his spot on Amazon Germany I've picked this set up for £14 which is £28 cheaper than in the UK  ???

I don't know any Atterberg so this is more new music for 2013  :)

Ooh, based on what you're 'currently listening', I think you will enjoy it immensely, Anthony!

Found in the mailbox today: Frank Martin concertos, including the Harpsichord Concerto recommended by Scarpia; and a disc of music from the Classical era: Wölfl Symphonies in G minor and C major (with opus numbers 40 and 41  8) ) performed by the conductorless Russian period band, Pratum Integrum. Wölfl String Quartets (on the same label, same PI group) were ordered too but didn't arrive today.

Cheers, really looking forward to Atterberg now, anything along the lines of Mahler, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev will do nicely.

I've all of those as individual components (Martinon symphonies and Hoelscher concertos from Brilliant, and that OOP Vox box) and there's nothing negative to say about any of it--
--BUT:
I liked that third CD from the Vox box better than I did the piano concertos--it was musically more interesting (not a matter of the performers, but of the material being performed, that is).  If you can't find alternate performances, or find that CD individually, it might be worthwhile ordering a used copy of the Vox box--Amazon MP prices are starting at $14 including s/h at the moment.

And Atterberg is A+++ .

Indeed, Anthony, we seem to have rather similar tastes, so I'd imagine you'd find something to enjoy in Atterberg's music. Just don't expect anything as "modern" as Stravinsky, Shostakovich, or Prokofiev in Atterberg's output, except maybe his Symphony no. 9. He's a Romantic to the core. I greatly look forward to hearing your thoughts on his symphonies. :)
