Heard this a bit ago on my pre-dawn jaunt:

Alan Hovhaness: Symphony #2 "Mysterious Mountain" Op 132
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra / Gerard Schwarz
Telarc 80604

WOW!  and good morning.
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

Goodmorning Bill. That is indeed a fine recording of a astounding work.

Benjamin Frankel.

Symphony No. 2, opus 38.

Symphony No. 3, opus 40.

Queensland SO/Werner Andreas Albert.

This recording made in 1994, sounds fabulous, and the introductory words from the composer spoken on the cd, gives this production extra value to me, for in concise words he explains the birth of these works.
The Symphony No. 2 is in three movements, and are a firm contrast in it self. It ranges from introverted magical, to boisterous and loud, but never without a exquisite taste, and grandeur that has a profound effect on me. From day one, when I heard this composer I was sold, and I became deeply immersed in his music. Only the Violin concerto to go on, I nevertheless began purchasing his works, and I never regretted it. His second is closely argued, and tightly constructed in which varied forms come together in one conclusive argument.
His third symphony composed in only 3 weeks, bring together formalism and serialism without loosing the emotional argument, and adding a urgency to the subject matter that is closely observed by this most excellent orchestra and conductor. It is in one movement knitted together by a lot of little episodes, bounded together by finely structured scoring.
Very much the music I revel in, and as some say worthless musical sleaze. :(

Are you aware how insulting this is?  Day after day you post on here a record of the torrents of worthless musical sleaze in which you choose to immerse yourself - and yet you think you have the right to lecture others on where musical merit does and does not lie?  What insufferable arrogance.

You know what?  I've had enough of this.

Nigel, I regret to see you go - come back!  :-\

Same here. It is so regrettable to lately have lost valued and congenial posters.  :'(

Beethoven: String Quartet in C, Op. 59, No. 3 (Orion String Quartet) - Liking this group a lot.  They have a vigorous, energetic approach, and the sound quality is excellent.

Oh thanks, I'd be inclined to seek them out.  This recording is apparently the first installment of a complete cycle, and my first thought was "very impressive."

Poor Nigel, bad, bad Harry! :P

Don't bother to answer the previous quetion.

Now, Harry, you are extending the unfortunate contretemps between you and Nigel to the entire membership, trying to make it a "you're siding with one or the other of us" affair.  I know you are more sensible than that, Harry.  I would not have either of you leave the forum. Period.

I dont have the CD. Recorded from the radio for some reason  ::)

There was no unfortunate contretemps between me and Nigel, this affair was of his own making.

Horse manure and you know it. It started with you saying something utterly stupid, yet arrogant, followed by self-aggrandisment backed by some mysterious 'your circles', he called you on it and you started the usual passive-aggressive slime outpour.
