Rap is not dead--at least I hope not. Rock is dead--at least I hope so (good riddance to bad rubbish!).

Anyway, listen to these pieces by Kamau Daaood--the Gil Scott Heron for a new generation. Amazing stuff...

Actually I do like the genre of spoken word a great deal, and think it represents a great flowering of black/African-American musical creativity that has deep roots in diverse forms such as jazz, rap, hip-hop, and possibly other forms. I listen to a lot of jazz, and am especially fond of avant-garde free jazz. New spoken word pieces are regularly featured by DJs (yes, these still exist--try KCSM or KPFK) alongside classic and new avant-garde free jazz artists such as Pharoah Sanders, Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, Coung Vu, Christian Scott, et al. Although some spoken word pieces do indeed express dismay over the situation of black people in America, injustice, etc., I have never heard any celebration of violence or hatred. This musical genre is overwhelmingly positive in its message, which represents one major departure from rap. (NOTE: I have added the words "spoken word" to the title of this thread to better indicate its content.)

Anyway, examples of spoken word include the two links I posted--did you listen to them? I am actually no fan of mainstream rap or gangsta rap, however, I really cannot conjure any more hate or contempt for that stuff than I can for rock and its derivative forms (metal, punk, etc).

Anyone who proclaims pop / rock / rap / whatever dead is just out of touch. There's tons of brilliant, worthwhile music happening and evolving right now in every genre imaginable - it just requires work to cut through the bullshit which has also multiplied, due to the democratization of the whole industry.

Those are very good.

I like Africa Revisited by Amiri Baraka and Billy Harper a lot. Two other spoken word pieces are included in the album Blueprints Of Jazz Vol. 2.

Yea .. the Rock era is dead .. rap is devoid of content and never really was about music much, .. commercial or pop music has been dead for a long time. The masses need a re-awakening or something. In fact, I'm starting to ask myself is the music era over?!!!

Maybe it's you who needs re-awakening? I mean yes, there's a lot of crappy music out there (and always has been), but your attitude takes the cake. Do you even scan commercial music or is your opinion based on hearing one song by Justin Bieber on MTV?

As dead as the "classical era"? ;)

You're joking right?

No, why? You asked samples of "the good stuff" and I there you have it.

Yea .. well post some of it, let's hear it.

Yea, let's scratch the surface! That'll surely work.

But hey, why not. Here's a random sample of current artists that I feel are pushing boundaries and doing something new, interesting and worthwhile.

Thanks for sharing this stuff folks, now I know what to avoid for the future.

There is not that much music that sounds good when one's head has such a deep posterior implant
