Listening to Symphony No. 8. An absolute masterwork. Incredible performance as well from Rozhdestvensky/Royal Stockholm PO.

Ñö.

None of these exist in French  ;D .

I still haven't figured out how to get the accent grave on the u on my keyboard. Essential when differentiating spellings for 'ou'.  ::)

In a sort-of epic mood:

This has (particularly in the first movement) a manic edge which I don't hear in the other recordings of the work. Ultimately the sensation left by this recording is as if you just took a steamroller to the face. Which is, I think, the point of the work.

Not really a Pettersson fan, but with this work (as with the 8th and 10th symphonies) I can see why people find him so appealing. After so much punchdrunk writing, the coda does feel genuinely cathartic.

A typical reaction from an anti-Punkhausen listener. ;) :D You're actually doing better than I am, I don't think I could get enough courage to take a listen.
There are two or three works of his I can manage. Mantra (for two pianos and percussion) is a work that I do genuinely like. I dislike Gruppen, but I do hope to figure it out one day and I'd love to see it performed live for the hell of it.
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Composers on my wish-list to see performed live one day: Shostakovich, Schnittke, Lutoslawski, Bartok, Scelsi, Hartmann, the Second Viennese School, Feldman's Rothko Chapel, and Ligeti.

Barber, Adagio
Bartok, MSPC
Ben Haim, Sweet Psalmist of Israel

Bernstein box 29

Pertinent to our discussion, a dignified Adagio that develops naturally and avoids saccharine and silkiness. Very fine indeed.

MSPC This guy is the Bartok whisperer. Bernstein really has a way with the sound world. Up there with Reiner.

Love this one, Gordo!  My Grandmother's favorite album - I still have her vinyl, original pressing of it, as well as a recent Hybrid SACD release.   :)  Think I'll spin it later on. . .

Hat tip in Que's direction. 8)

Thanks for sharing those memories, Dave!

As usual, Que has provided a fine suggestion.

BTW, after a long time I'm listening to this one again:

Great, great recording and interpretation of Buxtehude's chamber music, including some pieces for two harpsichords, lovely played. Currently OOP, it's, however, part of vol. 1 of the DHM anniversary set.  :)

Listening to Little Requiem for a Certain Polka. Cool work.

Berlioz, Harold, Lennie from da big box.

This is a famous recording, much admired, but I found it disappointing. Partly the sonics are lousy, very flat. And partly the violist, the NYPO principal, never gets Harold out of bed. Ravel's Tzigane is on the same disc and comes off well. Still, one of the few clunkers I have found in da big box, after hearing 20 discs now.

PS, John listen to Gorecki, Nate listening to ten Holt? Our plan for world domination progresses fellow minimalists.
