Listening to Symphony No. 3. Such a great work.

Todd

Nino Gvetadze's Liszt.  Small in scale, and generally quite lovely.  The Sonata is not a barnstorming version, and Gvetadze takes some passages very deliberately, but the Andante is uncommonly beautiful.  The other works are comparatively better, with even the 10th Hungarian Rhapsody made enjoyable.  I would enjoy hearing her play the Consolations, and better yet, some Schubert.

Friedhelm Flamme plays a couple of big choral partitas by Weckmann. The thing that puts this in the super-league of Weckmann recordings is the way he reveals the counterpoint: it's not just that his registrations make the voices separate and equal in importance. It's that his articulations make the lines relate to each other in interesting and inspired ways.

The other strength is the mood. It manages to be at one and the same time both very direct, and very spiritual. It least I hear it as spiritual, but maybe I have a twisted idea of spirituality. And that gives Flamme's Weckmann a really distinctive and attractive personality.

I thought that O lux beata was less successful that Es ist das heil, but I'm not sure if it's me. I generally prefer Es ist das heil anyway. Having said that Rampe last night sounded very good in O lux beata.

What Flamme doesn't have is a certain sort of fervour, ardour, which I remember was there in Foccroulle, but Foccroulle will have to wait till I get back from work.

I recently relisten to a CD by Flamme with the works of W.F. Bach (Complete Organ Works)
Last time I had it in my player was in 2012, so I have given it a second run.
Only my wife prevented me to break it into pieces.
Flamme is simply burning in the wrong direction.
Terrible performance!

I hear you, my friend! :)

This on the other hand, is really excellent - well recorded too!

Yes a Triumph!
I have listen to the third disc yesterday, (will write review today) but I can only add, that this is the strongest interpretation of Kuhnau's work that I ever heard, but I must add I only heard live recording in churches, never a recording. There are  very few of them.

for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

And do not forget the fabulous set of Homilius also on Brilliant.
Its almost to good to be true. Its in my top acquisition list this year.
It has been a dozen times in my player, and I do not get enough of it.

The last disc from Kuhnau's complete organ music. First choice recording.

I'm enjoying this immensely.  I will admit, however, that I am prejudiced in favor of Badura-Skoda.  He just looks like such a sweet, kindly old gent that I really wanted (and expected) to enjoy this disc.  How can an 82 year old have this light, dancing touch?  Delightful and charming.

Every so often, we come into contact with music that we just connect with in some way. Some even rock our world.  Luis Briceno's El Fenix de Paris is such a disc for me. I have been entranced since I heard the first note of this disc. Brilliant!
