I would put the 11th and the Symphonic Mass at the top of my list.

Come to think of it, I'd probably put 11 ahead of 6 too...and damn, the Second's Largo is melodic nirvana.

my brain is rather slow tonight after two bottles of champagne  8)

Hey, sounds like you're living well tonight!  8) 8)

Of the stuff I've heard so far, my fave is still the unlikely journey to affirmation in 5.

A Moet et Chandon rosé with the scallops, and for dessert a regular Brut. Yes, I'm happy  8)

Mmmm, bliss! Sounds so good  :)

Not that I can complain - I may be sober now, but tonight I'm on duty for my new gig as a pro restaurant critic!

Heh. I'm trying to picture your avatar saying this line.

(sounds like a great evening, though)

;D :D ;D ...I became a food and wine snob after I retired from the army. Before that, I was happy with a box of C rations or a packet of MREs and a coke  :D

Excellent! Who's paying for the meal?

Bach: Orchestral Suites 3 & 4....

These were all very well played; lyrical and lively performances that sing and, very importantly, dance.

Why don't you just say you like all of Stravinsky's ballets, Ray? ;) ;D

;D  Not quite.  L`histoire du Soldat, Renard the Fox and The Wedding are not really my cup of tea.  :-\

The Wedding I understand. That has yet to click with me. But Soldat??? Say it ain't so, Nut!

Dallas newspaper. And they're paying for a chic new Italian place, so I'm really mad at myself for eating such a big lunch and feeling full right now. :(

I can empathize. Mrs. Rock, who's been on vacation the last couple of days, prepared a substantial lunch today (smoked shark, fried rice with chicken, and kimchee) and even though we ate supper considerably later than usual, it still came too soon for maximum enjoyment.

Thanks for that, North Star. ;D

I'll definitely check it out. . .

I have to be candid though: I'm not a fan of Vanska's Sibelius cycle or Kullervo at all- as they are entirely too laid back and attenuated for my tastes (although I think he does a tolerably-well dramatic job on parts of his Origin of Fire).

So I can only imagine how he approaches Pohjola's Daughter.

Vanska's Kullervo is so slow that it makes my epinephrine level go sky-high!

William Alwyn - Lyra Angelica - Concerto for Harp & Orchestra
Suzanne Willison
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic / David Lloyd-Jones

Despite having known Alwyn's symphonies for a loooong time, it was only a few years ago that I discovered this sublime work.  If I ever get to program a real concert, this will be at the top of my list to include - the only problem being that I have at least a dozen other works that are at the top of the same list!

Yevhen Stankovych's Symphony No.3 "I Affirm Myself" - Fyodor Glushchenko, cond.

The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat - François Périer, Philippe Clay, Gabriel Cattand et al

The new erato

An extremely fine recording of a very moving work.

The second of two cantatas for Advent by Telemann this morning. I listed the first one in the Music for Advent and Christmas thread. This time it is Saget den verzagten Herzen....
