Some recent purchases:

Hey HIPster - hope that you enjoy the Azzolini bassoon performances - I have all four volumes (as above) - 2 as regular purchases and 2 others as MP3 downloads burned to CD-R - believe that I'll take them out and give a listen tomorrow!  Love that guy on a Baroque bassoon!  :)  Dave

Right on SonicDave!   :)

I have the first volume of his bassoon concertos and really dig it.  I've been holding out for a boxed set of the complete series.

However, with Naive, one can never tell of course.   ::)

I have my fingers crossed (especially with the latest volume released)!

Which is your favorite in the series?
Wise words from Que:

Never waste a good reason for a purchase....  ;)

Actually, $52 at the brick and mortar shop in town.  It would be foolish to resist...

Sell it on Amazon US for a 300% profit....starts there for $150 used.

These all landed in a heap today.  Even the UK vendor needed only a week to get it to me

This is, if I counted correctly, my 17th Mahler cycle.
To balance that, I have never heard anything by Tubin and (I think) Arnold.

Excellent haul, Jeffrey. Let me know what you think of Tubin and Arnold. That Stenz cycle of Mahler looks quite interesting. Would be curious to know what you think that cycle as well. Interestingly enough, I believe Stenz's Mahler is the only cycle my dad lacks (he's the Mahlerian in the family). :) I probably will get this for him for Father's Day.

At least the packaging for that Stenz is good: unlike several other boxed up cycles every symphony has its own CD (or two, in the case of 2,3,6).  Even the Adagio of the 10th has its own CD (Stenz did not do any of the completed versions).

Very nice. Have you heard any of these performances from Stenz previously or are these all completely new performances for you?

Completely new.  I purposely held off buying them until the box set came out.

I don't think it's easy to sell on Amazon. Actually, I've been thinking a lot about unloading a lot of boxes.

Back in Brussels,  where a visit to La Boîte à Musique is a must for me, and where I've bought these recent releases:

[asin]B01DTBDGR0[/asin]
I don't know how much of the music in these two operas is actually by Debussy,  but these reconstructions / completions look interesting in any case.

I'm increasingly fascinated by Threni, which now appears to me as one of the pinnacles of Stravinsky's output,  and given the nature of the piece,  it should suit Herreweghe's talents very well.

I got this one about two weeks ago, in the same old grey cover. I think I once read that Czechoslovakia was the only Eastern bloc country that had a CD manufacturing plant in the late 1980s. There were digital CD recordings produced also in East Germany or Hungary of course, but they had to be manufactured in Czechoslovakia.

Thank you for that as I had wondered about the cover actually. I am really looking forward to hearing it  :)

Great stuff! Really enjoyed that Bloch recording. Evocations is one of my favorite works from him.

Today, I decided to listen to all four volumes - never thought I had a favorite and enjoyed them all!  Now on Vol. 2 which is great w/ the bassoon prominent - will finish up this afternoon w/ the last two discs (these are my MP3 purchases burned to CD-R at 256 kbps, so their quality is quite good).  Dave :)

Mancini Recorder Sonatas....

Mirror Image

I was going to hold on purchasing anything at least for a month or two, but I saw these for good prices and given the rarity of them, I just couldn't resist any longer:

It was a rare thing to see Bernstein conduct Strauss as he didn't make it a habit, but it will be interesting to hear how he handles this music.

Yes, I will be interested to read what you make of those.

One reviewer called Bernstein's Zarathustra slow, but that's okay, it's Bernstein, so it can't be that bad. ;)

Hope that you enjoy - my only complaints on that set are the discs short timings; also have the other recordings added above - love the Musica Pacifica one (which is mostly Mancini w/ one work each by Durante & D. Scarlatti).  Dave :)
