Malmö SO/Ehrling

Autumn Leaves

#69361
This evening's listening:

Ballad For Harp & Strings
Harp Concerto

I hardly listened to this set - I need to dig into it as I found these pieces very nice.

Alexander Nevsky

Prokofiev: Symphony No. 6 - Rozhdestvensky/Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra of the USSR.

Brooding, sober stuff, perfectly at home during a subdued Sunday afternoon.
"You overestimate my power of attraction," he told her. "No, I don't," she replied sharply, "and neither do you".

Light Strung Sigils, a very very pretty work.....as far as New Complexity goes. Very melodic, and the way Dench has orchestrated in this small ensemble setting creates a very large, varied sound palette.

What did you think of the work, orfeo? I personally would have started with something like Geysir, Hekla, or Dettifoss. The best I can remember Saga Symphony didn't make much of an impression on me.

Prokofiev: Symphony No. 4 - Rozhdestvensky/Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra of the USSR.

Continuing with Prokofiev, this time - chyetyrye.

I'm going through the BIS recordings in the order they were released, so this came up first. I can see that orchestral music is to Leifs' advantage, but I still don't know quite what to make of it. It's interesting and not, all at the same time. As a person who likes progress and development, Leifs is a puzzle. This isn't the minimalism that I'm disinterested in, and yet... I don't know quite what it is.

Anyway, thread duty is Sibelius Symphony No.7

When the music slows down for the final turn of the big trombone theme... blimey. It's one of the most amazing things. It's like an entire landscape opens up in slow motion, as a light gets brighter and brighter and then becomes overwhelming.

It's a Schnittke kind of party for me:

Listening to Symphony No. 4. Great stuff.

Alkan: LP 1 - Comme le vent, En rythme molossique, Scherzo diabolico and Symphony for solo piano....

....all interesting music and well played.

Random thought: I used to know Mackerras' nephew.

Not that well, but we had mutual friends in common. Haven't thought about that for a long time.
