Any thoughts on this:

Don't have any of her recordings.

If I didn't already have a number of Hewitt's Bach recordings I'd jump on this box. This is playing NOT just for piano aficionados. It's great BACH!

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Indeed, she is a very important Bach player. She has lots of personality, but nothing that ever interferes with the music. In Bach playing, this is just the ticket. Gould is too 'interpretative', Schiff is too 'instrumental'. Both are remarkable, but the bias is clarly heard.

Hewitt's Bach is as natural as Kempff's Beethoven, Kocsis' Bartok or Kraus' Mozart.

Naxos Music Library just added all three of these on Friday:

Anybody heard 'em all? Got any favorites?

I suggest the Sejna.

I watched some on Youtube. She plays very freely with a romantic flair that gives the music new life it seems. It is mesmerizing, and I am not even a piano player. Can't believe some comments that call her pretentious...

Very honestly, I wonder if that  has something to do with look, attire, grooming, etc. In this day and age, she does look like she stepped in from the Kathleen Ferrier era. OTOH - or rather, in the same vein - just look  at some comments about Ida Handel's look, attire and grooming. She got lots of disparaging comments that really took the attention away  from her actual artistry. And yet, I dare say that both are among the greatest, most original and unconventional artists of their day (Handel is still alive but not exactly kicking, unfortunately).

Thanks for your refreshing post !

That has to be a strong contender in the ugly cover art category. Someone got paid to think of putting his picture on the cover, tinted sickly blue?

I like that she plays music that a zillion others play and finds something new in every piece and projects it effectively. Whether you agree with her styles or not pretty much gets thrown out the window.

I think she gets some criticism because at times she seems over the top and pedantic. That and she doesn't look like Helen Grimaud or Yuja Wang...

No that would be this one:

which give new meeting to the phrase "WTF"? If that is a reference to Beethoven on his deathbed shaking his fists at the heavens it doesn't work. It only makes him look like some loon from the movie "Wrong Turn".

Alberti, Domenico (1710-1740) - Complete Keyboard Music - 4 CDs w/ Manuel Tomadin on 3 different instruments - reading the current July-August issue of Fanfare and this package received an excellent review; the composer was quite short-lived - available for $14 on the Amazon MP - anyone familiar w/ this recording(s)?  Thanks - Dave :)

ADDENDUM:  A recent Fanfare review piqued my interest in this 4-CD set, as already mentioned - however, I also found a MusicWeb review in which the recording was 'axed' based on the selection of the fortepiano; just one quoted comment - "I find this choice incomprehensible and for me it is a major flaw of this production".  Not sure that I would agree w/ this assessment relative to discourage a purchase?  Both reviews attached for those interested.

And still he was able to lend his name to the Alberti bass.

Thanks for the links to the very interesting stuff above, Mandryka.
I hope it is possible to get hold of it, but I have to wait some weeks until I order the CDs.

I've just Benjamin Britten for the first time via his String Quartet No. 2 and I'd like to hear more. Is there a preferred set of performances (preferably a box) or is this one worth considering?

Thanks.

North Star

I have almost all of that in the EMI Britten Collector's Edition set. Fine performances, all.

I will also be interested in the answers to that question.

I'm just going to go ahead and order that set. According to the review here http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2013/Aug13/Britten_chamber_0151492.htm there are a couple of notable omissions, but it still seems to be a worthwhile option. And it's relatively cheap, so I'll just stick it in as part of an Amazon order and it can lay around my local post office until I get back from  my travels.  ;D
