The spoof-like satirical first 30-45 min left us perplexed...then it hit us. Hard.

Hi Simon - not a lot of choices in North Carolina (maybe a dozen), but the two that I usually alternate are Whitehaven and Kim Crawford - my introduction to New Zealand SB was back in the early 1980s on a medical meeting to Hawaii, where I first experience one which was Cloudy Bay.  I'm also a BIG Pinot Noir fan and mainly drink Oregon and California (the red Burgundies I use to buy decades ago have become too expensive) - I would love to try more from your country but few get shipped to my area.  Dave :)

Yeah, sometimes the popular stuff is actually good. :)

Same, but I will always think of this!

Thanks for that. I don't know those but just checked the prices and they're unexpectedly affordable (here anyway). Will keep an eye out for them.

Well, in the 80s-90s, I used to buy a lot of Cloudy Bay (kind of the 'founding' SB of NZ) but the prices really escalated because of it's popularity - just ordered some wine delivered from a place called Total Wine (a chain store) - below the comparative prices on the two wines under question - rather get 2 bottles of Whitehaven (WH)  :D - we have sushi delivered every Sunday and I always screw off the cap on a bottle of WH!  Dave :)

Hmmm!  A subtle joke perhaps, to de-emphasize "doubt," or the lower case simply looked better in the title frame?

Wait total wine delivers?  I only go there when I'm in Columbia (which is rarely).

In a Violent Nature (2024)

The kills are brutal, with extremely effective gore. But a few of them are so OTT as to be winking at the audience. (one was beautifully done but so ridiculous that I chuckled -- I can't imagine it's even physically possible)

One of the first things the positive review at rogerebert.com mentions is that it's not really scary. And they're right, but there's a sense of dread throughout. Unlike in The Strangers Chapter One, these woods are creepy AF. The sound design is fantastic. When the two girls showed up on the dock off in the distance, for instance, I literally looked around because I thought someone in the cinema was talking.

I don't know how much I love it. Even at 90 min, it's a bit too leisurely at spots - especially at the end. But it's a creative approach to a timeworn genre, and it's very well done.

I really enjoy watching reaction videos re this film, seeing people confused at first and then punched in the gut.

All four of the main actors (ScarJo, Thomasin Mackenzie, Sam Rockwell, and the Jo Jo kid) are at the top of their games. Just superb.

Hi David - I'm just 15 mins from the Total Wine Store in Winston Salem, and for my zip code, delivery is available, as shown below - there is an inexpensive delivery fee plus a tip to be decided (I usually give the driver about $30 for a 2-case order).  Dave

The Longest Day (1962) - has been a while and a LONG film, but rated No. 1 HERE (2 of the others shown below); not sure that I've seen Storming Juno? The cast number is overwhelming (see below and link); nominated for 5 Oscars, winner of 2 (lost the 'Best Picture' award).  D-Day is tomorrow so if you have an interest and have never seen this movie, a strong recommendation.

Last year on a trip to Smith Mountain Lake in northern Virginia we visited the National D-Day Memorial in the small town of Bedford, Virginia - wrote a travelogue HERE, if interested (plenty of pics) - link explains reason why such a 'tiny' town was picked for the memorial - if in the area, a MUST visit.  Dave :)

QuoteThe Longest Day is a 1962 American epic war film based on Cornelius Ryan's 1959 non-fiction book about the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944. The film was produced by Darryl F. Zanuck for 20th Century Fox, and is directed by Ken Annakin (British and French exteriors), Andrew Marton (American exteriors), and Bernhard Wicki (German scenes). The screenplay was written by Ryan, with additional material written by others. The film features a large international ensemble cast that includes John Wayne, Kenneth More, Richard Todd, Robert Mitchum, Richard Burton, Steve Forrest, Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Red Buttons, Peter Lawford, Eddie Albert, Jeffrey Hunter, Stuart Whitman, Tom Tryon, Rod Steiger, Leo Genn, Gert Fröbe, Irina Demick, Bourvil, Curd Jürgens, George Segal, Robert Wagner, Paul Anka and Arletty. Many of these actors played roles that were essentially cameo appearances. (Source)

Hah, this reminds me, when I was about 14 my parents got a portable DVD player/screen so that we kids could watch movies in the back of the car. They took us on a road trip to DC, driving US 250 over northern West Virginia. We were in the back and the movie they brought for us to watch was "The Longest Day." Meanwhile in front, my father was driving US 250, which is a twisting, winding road that follows ridgetops through the Appalachians and takes numerous hairpin turns. You can almost never drive more than 40mph. At the end of the drive, my mom said, "That truly was the longest day!"

Fun movie on steaming, but IMHO,  it's much, much better on screen, preferably IMAX.

I heard the same about Zone of Interest - that it is better seen in a surround-sound setup - but missed my opportunity. I need to go see Furiosa before that opportunity is gone as well.  :-X
