This music from 1624 imbeds itself as part of our Zeitgeist now more than ever before, it forms a Musical prophecy.

Mysterious energies emanate from the music and character of Samuel Scheidt, and contrasting with the music of the time, his process at the organ originates from focusing inward on the sound material itself, opposed to rhetorical figures.

Using the Historical Registrations from Samuel Scheidt himself as well as specifically reconstructed playing techniques from the early 17th century, including composer-specific ornamentation and temporal manipulation described in the historical sources, we are able to hear the music as Scheidt Intended; confrontational, mysterious, and deeply emotional.

A very impressive pair of concerto discs;



The Williams disc is excellent and the violin soloist (recorded live at the Proms) a name to note.

The Chandos disc with "old hands" Litton and Hanslip is predictably fine.  The Robert Russell Bennett pieces just good fun and stunningly played/recorded.  The Duke Concerto takes itself much more seriously but is another piece well worth hearing.  Hanslip is one of my most favourite violinists and this disc reinforces that good opinion.

Not on Qobuz, which is a pity, for I would love to hear this.

Both in my listening queue! Although the williams disc does not yet show up on Qobuz, any idea what the release date is.?

And buying it on Bandcamp means that more of the money goes to the performers rather than the platform. :)

Serious, weighty. Matteo Messori, who is often slower and uses a bass strong harpsichord too, and also has a penchant for rubato like Hakkinen, finds so much more life, joy.

I find Häkkinen's AoF dull and a bit slack and the the contribution of strings in some of the Cpt.s seems strange and unintegrated, while Messori's AoF is so much better, and as you write, full of (inner) life.
