On Werner Herzog's documentaries: don't forget Grizzly Man !

Agree x1000.

Bogey

If you enjoy that early 70's, on location, not afraid to shoot in daylight, low thug drama, then this one is for you:

And besides Mitchum, its got all those "guys".....you know....:

Peter Boyle:

Richard Jordan

Alex Rocco

Joe Santos

and there are others.  Just gritty and no frills.
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

Kurosawa's Throne of Blood.

Compare his Yojimbo to the American version:

[asin]6304698747[/asin]

with...

Bruce Willis, Bruce Dern, and Christopher Walken.  Directed by Walter Hill.  I thought it was a decent homage, but others did not.  I should revisit it after c. 20 years.

André

Journey to Italy by Rossellini 91954)

The House and the World by Satyajit Ray (1984)

Both are quite remarkable. Bergman has never been so luminous. What a presence !  The storyline of Ray's film (situated in colonial India, 1907) could have been written for today.

Thread Duty:

Last night, for the second time, The Dark Knight.  I wanted to go back to it, now that I have seen Batman Begins.  Heath Ledger's extraordinary performance was, erm, even better the second time.

All right, I must find the third movie at the library . . . .

Blood Ties.  An attempt at making a "gritty" 70s era crime flick, filled with period detail (including James Caan!), and so on.  The twist is that the main thug has a brother who is - wait for it - a cop!  There are a few good scenes, but the movie drags, and attempts at New York accents don't fare so well (sometimes Clive Owen sounds like a Brit pretending to be a yank).  Marion Cotillard is terribly miscast and, well, almost terrible.  Using the trusty four star system, this is a two star flick if ever I've seen one.

Morally prepared!
My preparations include avoiding the movie for as long as possible (that is, I may consider seeing it when it's broadcast on TV, with high spirits and low company..)

The Dark KNight Rises is no where near Matrix Sequels bad...or at least that's my opinion. And I liked TDKR, not as much as Begins or TDK though.

This one is for you, Karl..

And apparently it's Hobbit Day.

Probably at least some of you know this series: it seems similar to the Archer animation on FX.
