Honestly, I just love that name, Leopold!

All I know is that Gassmann is one of those transitional, Mannheim style composers that SonicMan seems to be fond of (Richter, Abel, Gassmann, Stamic). His SQs, Op.1 (1768), are described as "symphonies", and are lifted up as one of the first examples of the new style.

There is one hopelessly OOP cd of his SQs (Agora?), and one other cd of his music (an opera?), but that's it. That's it. That's it.

Would Naxos just get it over with, and record everything by all these obscure composers, already??? Someone could sure level the playing field here.

btw- anyone have that SQ cd that you'd be willing to sell? ;D

Funny you should say that. Guess what's going to be released in September.

Some of those operas have truly awesome titles. "The Ridiculous Traveler," "Love in the Workplace," "The Enamored Philosopher."  ;D

The Naxos/September release that looks the most inviting to me is Schmidt's 2nd Symphony.  I remember hearing a Gassmann overture many years ago - wasn't impressed.
