yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Good morning Tasos!
I would be interested in your thoughts about the Khachaturian concerto. Not that many good recordings around.
She has the looks to start with.

Hey, Harry!

I got this for the Tchaikovsky, but she is excellent in both concerti. Her Khachaturian is certainly the best rendition of the work I've yet encountered (not that many encounters and not that many good recordings, as you said) and I think it's really good - in absolute terms.

Well, then it goes on my order list. Thanks Tasos for the prompt reply.

While it isn't exactly profound

Profundity in music is vastly overrated.  ;D

I'm a big Spohr fan. His violin concertos, string quartets & quintets and symphonies are delightful.

Spohr
Quartet 4

Trying to pique Brian's interest ...

Andrei introduced a nice phrase on another thread "appalling Brucknerization".
Spohr is like Reger un-Bruckerized.

On to Raff, String Quartet 2

Come on, he couldn't possibly be that bad!

What a fascinating piece this is...The entrance of the soloists in section 1 (after the introduction by the ensemble) never fails to impress me (I can only describe it as "arpeggiated arpeggios"). Then, there are small details here and there that sound miraculous; for instance, the isolated notes of the tuba in section 6, which give a touch of serenity and somehow affix the lines in this otherwise busy part.

I've said it before: attending a concert of Répons (conducted by the composer) here in Madrid in 1992 was one of the highlights of my concert-going life.  :)
