For the piano music I only have Martin Roscoe on Hyperion, who doesn't nail it. There aren't a ton of recordings, though. For the violin sonatas, I have this release

It's very good.

That disc is included in this box (in which I find the string quartets excellent):

I was rather underwhelmed by one disc with string quartets (the wind quintet is great, of course), so I never looked further into the chamber (or piano) music. Which recordings are recommended for the violin sonatas and piano music?

Just to make it more difficult, my 5 favourites not so far mentioned:

1st Violin Sonata
3 Motets
3 Piano Pieces
Aladdin
and of course, the epic Allegretto for 2 recorders (which narrowly edged out the Cantata for the Opening of the Swimming Baths).
"All the world is birthday cake" - George Harrison

The new erato

And nobody is mentioning the great, great, great Hymnus Amoris? My favorite with the 3 symphonies 4,3,6 and Helios overture + clarinet concerto.

Søvnen only just edged it out in my list . . . .

Great list, Johan. Good to see another pick for the Symphony No. 5, Imaginary Trip to the Faroe Islands, and Flute Concerto.

Very much in agreement. Nice to see Aladdin featured - a most enjoyable work.  :)

:P

I know I'm late to the party here, but this was hilarious. When something is this amusing, a thread derailment is the least of my worries. 8)

I need to spend time with the complete ballet;  the Suite certainly is top-shelf Nielsen!

Good to see you finally picked the right symphony!

My selected five of today, based on the rules, would be fairly conventional -

- 4th Symphony
- Aladdin Suite
- Clarinet Concerto
- Wind Quintet
- Chaconne for piano

Wouldn´t like to be without a lot of other Nielsen works, though ...

BTW, John McCabe´s superb old Decca recording of the complete piano music was released on CD this year:
