Mandryka

My least favourite composer so I won't comment other than to say that it sounds full of ideas and well recorded . I guess op 18 isn't that bad, so I'll give it a listen.

Maybe.

Transcriptions of Dufay motets and songs for wind band. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

No. Just no.

A load of tombeaux. I think the genre is interesting - they're not sad works, expressions of grief. They're designed to celebrate and ennoble the life. I'll be exploring this interesting release for sure.

This is out already and I can't remember if it was mentioned in this thread. Zimmermann, Boulez, Ligeti, Gielen's own music, etc looks pretty nice.

Arrau called Liszt's Piano Sonata Beethoven's Piano Sonata 33, I can see why you don't like either composer  ;D

...not quite a complete box I guess.

Going back to the Boulez box. More missing recordings: the Ravel concertos with Aimard. The eariler ones with Zimerman are present, though. I wrote to DG about this and the Tristan prelude - We'll see whether they care or respond.

Incidentally I received this with the post yesterday and listened to it to day.  It contains 46 ( :o) minutes of chancons by Dufay, Binchois and Vide (we get Virgina Bella and Triste Plaisir eg.) as well as a few anonymous dances, most of it played by standard Alta Capella (two shawns and one slide trumpet). There are no motets. The performances are competent, polished and a bit inexpressive (to some part due to the chosen instruments I think). I can't help feeling, that flutes (recorders) and vielles would be much better, if one wants to perform Dufay's chancons instrumentally. Probably I shall not revisit this CD often.

The pedal clavichord recording is by Erik van Bruggen.

I must have had a senior moment forgetting, that the Ritter sonatina was included on the van Brüggen recording you sent me a couple of years ago.

I thought this was an excellent release.  Contemporary music with immediacy, emotional heft, range and impact.

Universal is very bad about omitting recordings in complete boxes. Just in my collection, the complete Boston Symphony box is missing two LPs which they forgot, and the complete Daniel Barenboim is missing a recording which he asked that they withdraw.

What recording would that be?

First impressions are that this is rather nice and may well have something fresh to say. Particularly in the ornamentation department.

I think this is well worth hearing. I'm not saying it's "the best" or that the conception  is "right", but I am saying that I'm glad it exists. Sounds great too.

The sequence of 12 string quartet miniatures is rather good - I rate Mark Andre's music generally.

Response from DG:

Thank you very much for your message, for which we are very grateful. We are already aware of this issue and are in the process of reworking the box so that the recordings you mentioned will also be included in the box later.
All the best,
Your DG Team
