Richard Lester, Bach v. 2. It looks like it's a bit of a hotchpotch of suites, I enjoyed his restraint in the Goldberg Variations very much, so I'm looking forward to this release which is scheduled for April.

Say no more. I know. I'm an archivist by profession.

And you know what? I really do believe that Dupont & Dupond are related. :)

Obviously. Hergé is their father  ;).

has this been mentioned??

kind of surprised at the lack of any Dussek integrals until now; he's obviously a highly variable composer in terms of quality, but the best piano sonatas are on par with early Beethoven or early Schubert, and fantastically inventive and unique. (i've sightread most of them but a lot of them deserve professionals, especially Le retour à Paris and L'Invocation)

Not sure about this thread, but certainly in the Classical Corner.

Gasp!

Good thing I didn't make any silly resolutions about not buying CDs.

What does 'complete' mean? Presumably the recordings he made for companies now owned by Sony - RCA and CBS - repackaged as RCA Red Seal. Has there been any remastering? I suppose we will have to wait until August to find that out and given the paucity of information on many of these Sony reissues that could be tricky.

I am never sure who these massive reissues are aimed at. Surely a Szell fan will have most of this stuff anyway.

The new erato

A couple of interesting things picked up from mdt's new releases listings:

CACCINI, FRANCESCA La Liberazione Di Ruggiero Dall`isola D`alcina. Huelgas Ensemble / Paul van Nevel. Deutsche Harmonia Mundi 2cds

RICCHEZZA, DONATO Los Santos Ninos. Cappella Neapolitana / Antonio Florio. Glossa

I will pick them up, sooner or later. Also Porpora's Germanico.

Maestro267

There've been loads of these massive conductor boxsets lately.

I have some Szell, but a fair bit has been out-of-print for a while. Also it allows getting rid of a lot of bulky single issues and replacing with a compact non-ugly box.

I'm still waiting for Barbirolli's.

Yeah. Those Sony low-price reissue CDs from the 90s were almost all super ugly. It would be good to get rid of those.

"generic color with generic stock photo"

"nonsensical double image of a flower"

"hope you like color fades and italics and some handy text to remind you that there is an orchestra"

Honestly, the most attractive of those series was "fake newspaper that is somehow 100% headline"

I have Szell's complete Mozart recordings in a very ugly 'Original Jackets' box but that is probably a posting for another thread.

Most (all?) of Barbirolli's output for EMI/Warner has been issued in a variety boxes but not altogether in one but I expect you know that. I have quite a few of his Dutton/Barbirolli Society albums and wouldn't really be interested in duplicating them if they were collected together. The rest of his output is scattered over various labels and also boxes of public domain stuff - can't see it being brought together.

I don't find that ugly, oddly

The EMI and Nixa (controlled by EMI->Warner) would do it. Probably I've got half of it in various boxes and single releases, but I would probably spring for it, 100% would go for it if his stuff that has not been remastered since the late 1980's was redone. The remastering on his Vaughan Williams and Elgar is very far from optimum.

A few APRIL odds and ends

Cool front cover:

Variations on Light My Fire
Play Piano Play, "10 Pieces for Yuko"
Prelude and Fugue
Piano Sonatina

and perhaps most notably of all, a recording debut for an actual (former?) GMG poster!!!

Absolutely a must for anyone (like me) who did not buy the original recordings issued on single CDs in the 1990s. Dacapo box sets are always very well-produced.
