What was that an old compatriot of mine once said about being able to resist everything except temptation  ;D

He must have been wilde to say so.

Looking far into the future, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra is recording for BIS an album of Bach Brandenburgs paired with brand-new commissioned companion pieces for each, using identical instrumentations. The new composers are Uri Caine, Brett Dean, Anders Hillborg, Olga Neuwirth, Steven Mackey, and Marc-Anthony Turnage, and guest performers will include Mahan Esfahani, Pekka Kuusisto, and Antje Weithaas.

Indeed  :)

And just to prove the Great Man's point here I am again. Had a nice chat on the phone with a lady at Chandos Records yesterday. The Lyatoshinsky 3rd Symphony will be released early next year and I also asked about when Copland's Third Symphony will appear in the cycle recorded by John Wilson and the answer was this November. Ruth Gipps early September.

That is one heck of a coup for Mackey.

I have a version of the Brandenburgs where orchestrations of Shostakovich preludes and fugues are sandwiched between the concertos. It may look like a lunatic stunt, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

All 6 Brandenburg's and the new pieces will be performed on Sunday over two concerts at the Proms, if you want a preview.

A double CD, must be new material because I think the earlier recordings used a Louis Denis harpsichord. All his career he's promoted his image meticulously on the cover art. I expect he's a nice guy though, but I sense a bit narcissism there, which I don't like.

Yes Ensemble Caprice, and this is also the only one I have enjoyed with Brandenburg concertos in combination with modern works. But Shostakovich isn't that modern either, and the arrangements of his piano pieces are very well done.

Sold.  :D
His previous L. Couperin album was extremely good - some of the best stuff he has done.

I like that one a great deal, as well.

I actually like that cover, because it evokes... says something. Instead of just being pretty.

No idea about the music, mind you.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

MORE SEPTEMBER STUFF

"Playing the demanding and constantly shifting string quartet repertory is enough to fill up four lives. Buoyed up by this heritage, we wanted to explore less well-known territories. In the early years of the twentieth century, Bartok and Kodaly roamed the villages of Hungary and Romania, collecting, transcribing and recording hundreds of folk tunes and songs. Building on a number of encounters with leading figures of jazz and world music, we asked five instrumentalist-composers to write us pieces inspired by musical worlds to which they feel close. In addition to these new compositions, we wanted to record Escalay by the Egyptian oud player Hamza el Din who died in 2006, a nod to the Kronos Quartet whose approach is an inspiration to us."
