Here's an "interesting" new release:

Yes, it's a Lexus advertisement, featuring one movement each from the Four Seasons, Tchaikovsky's Serenade, and Grieg's Holberg Suite, plus the Pizzicato Polka, intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, and that one Karl Jenkins thing that's in every over-serious TV advertisement. It's all played by the "Bratislava Shymphony," because as everyone knows, nothing says Lexus - In the Key of Excellence quite like the Bratislava Shymphony.

I sampled the Tchaikovsky on NML, and the orchestra sounds worse than the average American conservatory orchestra, but better than the average American high school orchestra. They have quite serious issues sticking together on-rhythm and with intonation.

QuoteBach and Gabrielli: the focus of this recording is an unusual musical match involving the famous 6 Suites for violoncello solo by Johann Sebastian Bach and the little-known 7 Ricercari for violoncello solo (1689) by Domenico Gabrielli of Bologna, the first example of a work for unaccompanied cello in history, and thus the only precedent and possible model for the Bach masterpiece. In what ways are the two series of compositions linked? Cellist Mauro Valli is convinced that there is a connection between the two for a number of reasons, including the preponderant correspondence of the keys. Bach assiduously performed and transcribed works by Italian composers, not only those of his contemporaries but also of earlier musicians, so it is highly likely that he was familiar with Gabrielli's works, in particular with the Ricercari.

Mauro Valli provides an intriguingly new interpretation of Bach's six masterpieces by heralding each one with the corresponding Ricercare. The outcome is strikingly fresh and original, with a wealth of courageously personal diminutions and embellishments that derive from Valli's deep knowledge of the Italian baroque repertoire. Bach was fascinated by composers such as Frescobaldi, Albinoni and Vivaldi, and it certainly makes good sense to perform his Suites in the Italian style!

Is that the 4th best orchestra in Bratislava?

"Shymphony" is a nice cherry on top of this package.

I know this performer through his Froberger transcriptions.

If you look carefully at the picture and count the strings you'll see he's not playing a cello, he's playing a five string bass violin called a violone di Corelli. The recording is definitely worth a listen.

Does this sound like a plausible contender for a pre-echo of the Bach?

It looks like a 5-string cello, not a novelty for the 6th suite. It does not look like what we now know as a bass violin.

First impressions are that it's absolutely delightful recording of charming music, played with irresistible panache. In the past I haven't responded so positively to Jacquet de la Guere's chamber music, so either I'm in the mood or this is a successful performance or both.

He calls it in Italian a violone di Corelli and in French a basse de violon  à cinq cordes

It seems to have f-holes, which suggests it is of the violin family, like the cello, rather than the viol family, like the contrabass used in modern orchestras. Another clue would be whether the strings are tuned in 5ths, like a cello, or 4ths, like a viol.

It doesn't look big enough to be a violone (the violin family version of the contrabass viol) so I suspect it is sort of a cello with an extra bass string. Bach's 6th suite was written for a sort of cello with an extra treble string, I think.

Floris De Rycker is a great guy and a wonderful musician.

Jealousy, tenderness, loneliness and longing, desire, unattainability, sensuality, frustration, love, lust and loss in all their configurations come together in OSSESSO. The old masters allow us no escape from the painfully vivid portrayals of their experiences. Tromboncino and Gesualdo exemplify the extremes of which obsessiveness is capable, in their music as in their lives; in this sense, they are precursors to Phil Spector, Sid Vicious, or Bertrand Cantat. – A selection of absolutely touching madrigals about love and affliction that represent the kaleidoscope of feelings and emotions of their composers, be it in the late Middle Ages or in the Renaissance, interspersed with some instrumental pieces.
