Symphonic Addict

These releases haven't been posted yet, methinks:
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

For those who have been following the digital releases of the CBSO's "British Project" with Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, the two releases so far (Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem and Walton's Troilus and Cressida) are now being released on CD. Bookended by two much more popular bits: Elgar Sospiri and the fantasia on themes by Tallis.

Indeed and here is the cover:

Thanks. The Octets one could be interesting.

This is one for Que and Deprofundis. A sense of real music making from the sound on the CD, I can't explain it - they're interacting with each other so the performances are full of life, and the sound image is pretty good.

It is too poetic for you.
I actually listened to some of it. It's a slower, less well-played & less well-recorded version of the Mitsuko Uchida recording, which I already have and like. Unimpressed, but at least it's not boring.

There doesn't appear to be much audible vocalising in the recording by the way (unless it's in one of the movements I didn't finish).

The OG Prazak lineup has already done the Smetana, Dvorak 10-14 and Cypresses, and Martinu 3...and a few years ago they remade the Smetana with a new violinist. That's just what's in my collection from them (plus their Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Haydn), there is much more. Lots of really amazing playing for you to uncover! And mostly in the form of obscure used copies of 90s discs  ;D
Brian,

I have a few of their discs--though later like from 2008 and always keep an eye out for their earlier recordings too.   :)  Discovered some wonderful music by listening to their recordings.

Do you have any favorite recordings and/or lineups from their discography?

I honestly don't know what's going on at DG, but, for me, they've been releasing recordings that seem nothing more than marketing hype. Like a lot of these crossover type of recordings they've been putting out for the past few decades. It seems like the people in their marketing department have lost their minds, but this could be said about many of the big labels.

I'm quite sure there are plenty of albums with a title or subtitle like "British orchestral music" that no-one raises an eyebrow at.

I seem to remember the Naxos box of British string quartets was embraced with some enthusiasm.

True. But it was 20 CDs, and a good deal of the music it includes is not readily available, and it focused on the first 2/3rds of the 20th century, with works by some composers who are well known and some who aren't. [I recommend the set if you ever want to explore that particular pocket of the musical universe.]
This seems to "let's pick a well known piece by each of the 4 best known English composers".  The Walton is probably the only one of the four that hasn't been recorded a few times.

If it's intended to be a whole series of albums, though, the effect might well be similar.

But its not called Vol.1!  This really is 4 quite disparate pieces in spirit and form loosely linked by time and place.

Cuarteto Casals will be recording Mozart's quartets dedicated to Haydn on Harmonia Mundi.

The Argo Recitals

Not sure what this will be yet.

Not complete (as opposed to the now OOP Bartók set on Decca), but with interesting content—it can be seen in German at the jpc site.

Announced for mid-September.

Looks great, Rafael. Thanks for posting about this set. Warner Classics needs to slow down as this will be their fourth composer box set this year once it's released, although I think the Saint-Saëns set comes out in October. I don't care much for the title of the box set much like I didn't care for the title of the Dvořák one (i. e. The Slavonic Soul). Anyway, I'm surprised to see you mention Bartók as I thought you weren't a big fan of his music.

I do understand the need for CM to be a broad church and new releases to range from eclectic compilations to specialist niche recordings.  But God, there seems to be a lot a inane releases from big labels.  I've not doubt these folk can play like there's no tomorrow but the style of the release and the content depresses me!

If these artists are as good as their agents and record labels think - give them something substantial to play.  Sure the Kanneh-Mason disc includes a couple of interesting things but its still packaged as "Summertime" - aargh!  I saw a link to the Armstrong/Byrd disc/video.  Ferocious technique but he is literally hitting the piano with an attention-grabbing weird left-hand/one finger thing.  If you ever need proof the piano is a percussion instrument this is it

The new erato

But they are sure looking good on the covers!
