Biffo

Quote from: Papy Oli on September 16, 2023, 05:15:33 AMA set of 3 JS Bach cantatas (6, 99, 147) recorded by Herreweghe for Phi.

I can't find them previously recorded by him.

Thanks for the tip. I ordered the CD yesterday and it arrived this morning. So far, listened to BWV 99 - excellent, as always with Herreweghe.

Hmmm - unknown composer to me.  The Grove has a short bio of him:

(1884-1950). German composer. He studied at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin and from 1914 was a music critic and theory teacher in Hamburg. From 1923 to 1933 he was a lecturer in music at Hamburg University and, when the Nazis came to power, served on the cultural council of the Jüdische Kulturbund. He emigrated to London in 1937, and in 1941 established a strong friendship with Vaughan Williams, translating the latter's opera The Pilgrim's Progress into German.
As a composer he did not adhere to any of the modern schools. In Germany his works, which included a Symphony (1926), several suites and variation sets, chamber music and songs, were performed by eminent figures such as Fritz Busch, Muck, Schnabel and Strauss. He received far less attention in England, although a set of Five Pieces for piano was published by Fürstner in 1943.

Canadian concert review notes:

In 1939 he and family were interned on the Isle of Man. Although Ralph Vaughan Williams helped secure their release by 1940, he was still not permitted to work as a freelance music teacher until December 1943. In 1950 Müller-Hartmann died of a cerebral hemorrhage.
When, a few months before his death, Rachmaninov lamented that he no longer had the "strength and fire" to compose, friends reminded him of the Symphonic Dances, so charged with fire and strength. "Yes," he admitted. "I don't know how that happened. That was probably my last flicker."

No worries @Biffo . As much as I love his cantatas on Harmonia Mundi, I've always been underwhelmed in my attempts of his Phi recordings. I'll try again at some point. Not tried this new yet.

No I don't know that one -- there seems to be an emphasis on slightly earlier composers on the new one.

Indeed, the new one has earlier music. They should complement each other nicely. I can let you have the La Fenice if interested, just remind me your e-mail.

Until I bought this disc I only had Herreweghe on harmonia mundi and wasn't aware he had switched labels. So far I have listened to two of the cantatas on the Phi disc but not made any comparisons with his HM recordings.

Never previously heard of Phi.

Happy Christmas @Todd

I don't know if I can listen for Christmas or not, at least from Qobuz in the US.  The release date on this one is quite confusing.  It shows a release date of January 2023, yet I would have to pre-order the album.  (I guess UAT iz hrad.)

Exactly @Brian -- I was just about to tell him that when I saw your post!

I was enjoying his Mendelssohn this morning.

Pfft, I ain't European.  The US site shows the proper date format.

Typically, I get directed to the US version of the site even when I link to a non-American link - either that, or some things don't display at all.

His first four quartets gave me a very positive impression, so looking forward to this release.

Mozart: Mass in C Minor

Anna Dennis, Lucy Crowe (sopranos), Jess Dandy (contralto), Nicholas Mulroy (tenor), Robert Davies (baritone), Dunedin Consort, John Butt

Nearly a decade on from their Gramophone Award-winning recording of Mozart's Requiem, Butt and his Dunedin forces turn to another of the composer's unfinished sacred choral works (given here in a new completed edition by Clemens Kemme). The coupling is CPE Bach's Heilig ist Gott from 1776, scored for contralto, double choir and double orchestra.
