QuoteAn Original Jackets treasury of analogue-era pianism by legendary and lesser-known names from the catalogues of American Decca and Westminster released as a Limited Edition.

Spanning 1950 to 1963 - Clara Haskil in Scarlatti to Guiomar Novaes in Chopin and Debussy - the recordings in this set document the end of some distinguished careers (notably Benno Moiseiwitsch and Egon Petri) and the early flourishing of others, such as Jorg Demus and Nina Milkina. Classic examples of German, Russian, French, Hungarian, Romanian and American pianism illustrate the characteristics of their national schools, but most of all underline the personal artistry of musicians such as Haskil and Moiseiwitsch who always turned a phrase or a chord and made it their own.

QuoteAstounding debuts and legendary piano treasures on disc: newly remastered albums of 21 pianists from the analogue era, including many first-ever digital transfers in this limited edition (single pressing only) 22 CD box set.

Before he became a Decca icon, Vladimir Ashkenazy appeared on DG in performances recorded live at the 1955 Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Their reissue here is complemented by a Rachmaninoff sequence with Ashkenazy's teacher, Lev Oborin. At the same competition five years later, Arthur Rubinstein was so outraged at the low placing given by his fellow jurors to the Belgian pianist Michel Block that he created a special prize for him on the spot, and DG responded likewise by issuing precious recordings of his live Chopin performances from 1960.

The DG box will be the second way to get Michel Block's DG debut on digital, the other one being DG's newer "The Chopin Masters" box.

Looks like two objective must have boxes

If there are good transfers of Karolyi's  Chopin, that would be great. Good to see Milkina's name there - I know her Chopin, CPE Bach and Scarlatti, she's the real deal.

Eloquence usually do good work, I'm making my way through the Sydney Competition box now, mostly sounds quite solid. Seems like a good selection, only two pianists I don't particularly care for, Ashkenazy for his hard tone and Egon Petri for his sight reading style of "interpretation-less" interpretation.

Modern piano  :o Quite introspective, so that's good.

You ain't seen nothing yet. I give you Ara Malikian:

Nice organ, the playing seems maybe a bit serious and sensible - which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Quote from: San Antone on August 12, 2024, 09:53:43 AMI can think of several classical musicians who would benefit from a style adiser concerning their hair:

Simon Rattle

Steven Isserlis

Quote from: kyjo on August 12, 2024, 06:47:13 AMBIS' recent releases have generally been much less appealing than they used to be, for my tastes anyway. Those with more of an affinity for early music will likely disagree, I'm sure.
Quote from: foxandpeng on August 12, 2024, 07:22:10 AMMy preference has been for releases by contemporary or recent Nordic composers, so I would agree!
Though I agree overall that BIS is recently in a lull and less interesting to me, it's worth pointing out they have an August album of Rautavaara and Aho, September albums of Sorabji and Brett Dean, and October albums of Hosokawa, Tyler Futrell (b. 1983), and the Michael Collins album with Malcolm Arnold and Joseph Horovitz.

But yes, that month of May where every single release was Bach...  :-\

Add her a beard and you get Leif Segerstam...  ;D

BIS doesn't often do music by Elgar, but there is this:

I will be curious what you think of this. I listened to it but I do not know the music well at all. The performances seemed very passionate and "full romantic", not at all like English stereotypes.

I know the music like my pockets of course, but I haven't listened to this release yet (just noticed this release when checking out new released by BIS).

This music is indeed passionate and romantic in nature, but I'll report (in Elgar's thread I think) how successful these performances are when I have checked them out on Spotify...

Thumbs up for Aho, Rautavaara and Brett Dean!

A new Agon from someone who knows music of the period.  Nice.

The parents of the Leleu boys are either extraordinarily patient or hard of hearing.

It's been a minute since LFK released anything.  She's back, and it looks like she took control of the entire release.  Good for her.

I wonder how you access these on Spotify et al. Typing in the title did nothing. Nor did an obscure name like Milkina

I've found this series, which features a series of up and coming soloists, to be consistently good in both sonics and Mozartness.
