They're claiming 13 discs of Beethoven and 16 discs of Mahler.

Well, this is one box set I can definitely withstand,  since I have  at least 60 percent of it (meaning the aforementioned 29 CDs, plus his Schumann recordings,  and one CD from his Schubert cycle, which I assume will also be included.)

50 CDs of David Zinman makes me think that perhaps the mega boxset craze has now gone too far.

No way, I'm still waiting for the Yondoni Butt box.

Valses nobles et sentimentales,
From previous discussions I would have thought here was little nobility and even less sentimentality.

Was impressed with her live Scriabin. Not, perhaps, primarily how she played it, but THAT... but impressed even about that.

I can't believe this!! No one here is jumping for joy about the newly released Richard Strauss opera boxset I posted above! The artwork of the boxset (yes I know you should never judge a book by its cover) alone made me salivate.  Seeing as I have 8 of Strauss' operas (the well known ones) I thought the rest (Friedenstag, Die Agyptische Helena, Die Schweigsame Frau, Feuersnot, Die Liebe der Danae) not to mention the Intermezzo  might be of interest. The quality of those might not be up to par with Salome, Elektra, Die Frau ohnne Schatten and Der Rosenkavalier or even Daphne?

  oh well.....  :-\

No. No. It is exciting. I wish I could just buy the lesser known ones without having to re-buy the others if I end up getting this. I was considering it at some point, but I am not that impulsive when it comes to boxes. It took me nearly a year to finally splash for the Massenet. In that case, I had two discs, while here I imagine I may have half (depending on which versions they chose).
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

My problem with Strauss is that when he is good he is FABULOUS and when he's not....well let's just say that there is a fair amount of dead weight (not enough "bang for your buck" so to speak).  I'll hold fire on this box as well.

I'm not sure how the "complete" Grieg solo piano music takes up 7 CDs with Oppitz, 12 CDs with Knardahl, and 14 with Steen-Nokleberg.

And, because a David Zinman megabox isn't enough, there's this 19 CD box:

And that's only the concerto recordings!  I wonder how long until the solo repertoire box is brought to market.

"In his attempts to casually shimmy along [Ken Masur] looked like the only straight guy at a gay dance party."

The reason I read your reviews  8)  ...and for the musical insights, of course  ;)

Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

I'm a Harnoncourt fan, but these performances were a total failure. Relentless , brash and grim, that is not the early Mozart I know...  ::)

I know there is a future or pre-release thread (or threads), but I didn't find it, so I'll just mention here that on Michael Endres' updated website there is mention of a soon to be released recording of him playing Mendelssohn's complete Lieder ohne Worte, and that he's heading into the studio in April to record Schubert's Impromptus.  I eagerly look forward to both recordings.

Todd, thanks for the happy Michael Endres news.

Piazzolla Four Seasons
Falla Siete Canciones
Rota Divertimento Concertante

All in new arrangements for double bass (with violin in the Piazzolla, with harp in the Falla). Sounds like a fun album, but that is one of the worst covers I've seen in years.

You should have the honour of bringing it to the relevant thread, because I took one glance at it and thought 'that belongs on the thread about terrible artwork'.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.
