Note to Jens: Sony has (or is about to) re-issue the Bernstein cycle again in a standard budget box.   The "Carnegie Hall" box is therefore now only the latest but one.

So they have. But very, very, very laudably, they've kept the arrangement of CDs from the Carnegie box. Just a little thing, yet something to be so grateful for. :-)

Thanks Neal. I'll check that out.

It looks an excellent set-box, I look forward to knowing what it is like. ;D

Will post my thoughts! :)

Variable, but never bad.  I remember being unenthusiastic about the 8th, and that might be the worst of the performances (although it's not a bad one. Just not one that draws me back).  My impression was that the studio performances of 5-7 were good, but the parallel live performances were all better.

Note to Jens: Sony has (or is about to) re-issue the Bernstein cycle again in a standard budget box.   The "Carnegie Hall" box is therefore now only the latest but one.

Thank you for the feedback, Jeffrey. Before buying the set, I listened to excerpts from the performances of no.3 and 6 from this set on youtube which were what persuaded me to buy the set. They sounded excellent, although I did not hear anything from the 8th that you are less enthusiastic about. Looking forward to starting the set, after the Ring Cycle! ;)

3 Beethoven purchases?! Wow... I did not expect that from you, John! Do you like the Beethoven quartets? Oh, those late ones are absolutely amazing. So beautiful! I do not own those performances, but can imagine them being excellent. (So if you don't like them, you can always send them to me!  :P )

John, you know that in your case "needed" and "interested in" are merely equivalent expressions.

(Of couse, I can say exactly the same thing about myself!)

I have the middle quartets set--an excellent one--and have the other two on my wishlist--but I have enough performances of the quartets, especially the late quartets, that I've given them a relatively low priority.

Yeah, I'm beginning to really enjoy Beethoven's SQs. I listened to the String Quartet No. 14 on YouTube and thought the work was excellent. People keep telling me Beethoven's true genius was in his chamber music. Perhaps they are right? I know I read a quote somewhere where Stravinsky said he admired Beethoven's late SQs, so that kind of sparked my interest in these works.

I suppose you're right, Jeffrey. :)

I've heard nothing but good things about the Takacs Quartet's performances of these works. I have their Bartok SQ set, which is excellent. They are high individualistic group and seem to have a complete understanding of the music the choose to perform. I'm really looking forward to hearing them.

I've heard good things about this, John, I don't have it but I love Prokofiev's SQs. Let me know what you think.  ;)

Will do, Greg. I was looking through my Prokofiev collection the other day and noticed an unfathomable error on my part: NO SQs! I quickly rememdied this with this latest release from the Pavel Haas Quartet. The audio samples sounded fantastic.

The 14th Quartet (the C-sharp minor, op. 131) is sometimes considered his masterpiece in the medium, depending on whom you ask.  It's certainly an amazing, deeply moving work!  The Takacs recordings are a good choice - my own personal favorite is the Cleveland Quartet on Telarc.
So much great music, so little time...

Thanks, Conor! I'm just trying to broaden my horizons some and I figured Beethoven's SQs will hopefully act as a gateway for myself as well. 8)

Knowing your tastes (or at least pretending to do so ;)), I'd suggest you start with the so-called "Op. 133", if you've not already listened to it.

The 14th certainly is a masterwork of the medium for sure. I'm just trying to appreciate Beethoven more and gain a better insight into his music. I've already heard all of the symphonies, concerti, overtures, so I figured I would visit the more intimate side of the composer.

Yeah, I just listened to that one on YouTube performed by the Alban Berg Quartet. Very cool piece. 8)

Indeed. There's nothing quite like it in his entire oeuvre, IMHO. But despite all that gruff on the surface, it's wonderful when, on repeated listening, one starts to figure out the method to that madness.

I can't wait to hear the Takacs through the stereo in this work.

Good question. Have checked the status of your order? I know some sellers on Amazon MP provide a tracking number.
