Gave the Bruckner Symphonies etc. / Paternostro a chance, it was less than 7 Euros for the whole 11CD set.

Am listening to the 6th as a starter; no doubt it is going to take some time to listen through and "judge" this set. The sound is very good and pleasant. As the musicweb review says, the brass section is of varying quality (including real faulty playing), and the performance likewise meanders between being a bit boring and routine-like (parts of 1st movement for instance lack drive in the brass especially) and somewhat more impressive moments as well (parts of the Scherzo and Finale). Overall, I´m looking forward to hearing everything, however.

It has been on my radar for quite some time, especially considering the price tag, but now you have it, and I await your findings. I knew that the sound was good to very good! Its a provincial orchestra, but a very good one I might add. A family member of mine is playing in the string section.

I grabbed this set a few months ago at a local secondhand bookstore, for USD 16.  I've heard just the 4th and 7th so far - they are fine, if not spectacular, performances recorded live in concert.  Not the last word in Bruckner, then, but I'm glad I have the set, and it's hard to go wrong at such a rock-bottom price!
So much great music, so little time...

Well the Paternostro Bruckner seems to be a set full of contrasts. The 6th turned out to have comically faulty final chords, one of the worst examples of orchestral playing I´ve heard on record, and ultimately proved to be neglectable when thinking of its other limitations. But now I am listening to the 5th, having heard almost the whole Scherzo, and it is bloody great. That spirited sense of fine, integrated music-making and contrastful architecture is very present here, one of the best Bruckner performances I´ve come across for some time, and with wonderful sound. The Adagio is 18:59 and superb. The Scherzo has some real dancing to it ... The Finale seems a bit heavy, but I hope he will finish the work appropriately. This set is recommended just for this one performance.

I've been wanting to hear another Lyadov recording for years and who better to guide me than Svetlanov? I actually bought this from CD Universe who had a limited availability on this recording, so hopefully shipping will much quicker than Amazon's.

Finally taking the plunge with Tennstedt's Mahler after his 8th, which everyone raved about when I got into Mahler... except that I really didn't like it, had kept me away from him for about a decade. But the mind broadens and shelf-space narrows. Cheapo-production, befitting the bargain basement price... with only three out of 13 symphonies contained on one disc; everything else is shuffling back and forth between discs.  ::)  Makes me love the latest version of the Sony Bernstein set all the more. http://ionarts.blogspot.de/2009/12/best-recordings-of-2009-1.html

Variable, but never bad.  I remember being unenthusiastic about the 8th, and that might be the worst of the performances (although it's not a bad one. Just not one that draws me back).  My impression was that the studio performances of 5-7 were good, but the parallel live performances were all better.

Note to Jens: Sony has (or is about to) re-issue the Bernstein cycle again in a standard budget box.   The "Carnegie Hall" box is therefore now only the latest but one.
