If they have, I'm always happy to help.

Pulled the string (!) on this at amazon.com:

Thread duty: arrived this morning: Rautavaara Symphonies 1, 2, 3 and Bowen, Bush, and Brian.

Mahler, you ought to go see it.

Archaic Torso of Apollo

Decided to go ahead and get this recording, which I saw in my local CD emporium (yeah, we still have a few of them here):

Johann Hermann Schein: Israels Brünnlein (motets - a selection)

The performance is maximalist - big choir, large instrumental support, including crunchy sackbuts, whistly recorders, and other period gems. The music is superb too. Schein's approach to the texts is dramatic, full of contrast, emphasis, dissonance. Maybe a bit too "underlined" for some, but I like it a lot; this is music with plenty of character.

Some really fine playing here. I think you will enjoy this one.

Only about 6 recordings of the Beethoven Piano Sonatas were made before Hungerford's untimely death ...

Sarge
How appropriate with a bush aquisition in a g-string comment.

Okay, so I said I was done buying CDs until the new Delius recording came out....I really need to quit saying stuff like that. Mr. Hodges just reminded me of a recording that I have been looking at for a long time, but for whatever reason, I didn't buy it. I just bought it tonight:

So here I was, once again driven to the path of iniquity by Sarge, looking for the best price on Maazel's Bruckner.

Yet during this search, I came across the following for £45 via Amazon Marketplace, and bought that instead:

Contrary to my expectations when I originally heard of this set, not only did I not previously own more than 7 discs out of its 50, but the remaining 45 are unusually interesting for this kind of potpourri: Schiff's non-solo Bach, Goulda's WTC, an Arrau-Szeryng-Starker Beethoven Triple Concerto, Haskil's Mozart with Fricsay, etc.

Plus, it's been a while since I've invested in piano music. In fact, it's been a while since invested in any kind of music, and an even longer while for piano!

Maazel will have to wait for now.

Well, these aren't exactly "purchases" per se, I just borrowed them from Sydney City Library. But there's no "borrowing" thread so here they are. I borrowed the Schoenberg to listen to an alternative recording of Pierrot Lunaire, which I'll go an see live here in Sydney in a fortnight. The recording I have is Shafer/Boulez on DGG. I have heard this Manning/Rattle recording years ago & I remember it as quite ascerbic and hard bitten. It almost scared me away from the work! But now that I'm more mature & interested in this repertoire, I'm very much looking forward to hearing it again. The same concert will also feature Schoenberg's transcription of Strauss' Emperor Waltz, so I borrowed the original version conducted by Harnoncourt on a Strauss waltzes disc. It'll be interesting comparing Schoenberg's transcription when I hear it at the concert.

For $11, new in a stall in Saigon.  Legit discs.  I saw Solti's Bruckner complete for $20.  Wonder if I should get it.

If you wonder how Bruckner would sound played by Sousa, yes.

How can you tell if the CD's are legit?  SACD is just about the only format that is next to impossible to pirate ...

Hello Sid

Have you checked out the range of CDs you can borrow from the Sydney Con's own library?
Cheers

Simple.  What I bought from the person last year was legit, and this particular set was made in the EU.  I do know what I'm looking for having lived in Asia for quite some time.

That's a good idea, I'll have to enquire about how I can go about doing that (I'm not a student there, I just go to recitals there pretty regularly)...
