Quote from: Mirror Image on February 29, 2012, 08:34:56 AMThat Parry collection is excellent. I especially loved From Death to Life and Elergy for Brahms.

As an admirer of Elgar, RVW, Holst and Bax, I finally felt obligated to check the grandpappy of them all (regardless of Stanford being their actual teacher). If I like this I'll look at the symphonies.

Parry's Symphony No. 5 is, IMHO, one of the finest British symphonies ever composed. There's something about it that just transcends time and, the last movement in particular, runs through my mind quite often.

Boult or Bamert?

Bamert. I haven't heard Boult, but something tells me it's not as texturally and sonically impressive as Bamert's.

I don't have much by Casella.  Just the first 2 symphonies CDs on Naxos, and the Naxos CD containing Scarlattania, the song, and the cello concerto.  I am not too fond of the first symphony, nor the cello concerto but the rest I really liked

Honestly, just the 3rd symphony is the only work by Casella that I thought had greatest musical substance to it. I don't like his other two symphonies at all. To be even more honest, I prefer Respighi and Malipiero to Casella.

$18 off the market place (I know, I know, some of you got it for $12 a few months ago, but I wasn't smart enough to grab it then):

That's why I went for the Eighth--for something different. ("...this is without question the swiftest performance on disc. At merely 20 minutes, the first movement will shock you..."--Classics Today). I don't know if I'll like it (I tend to prefer broader tempos in general) but I doubt it will bore me  ;D

Ah, that reminds me, I owe
Karl an answer as to how I am getting along with those string quartets.

I have to admit: Not very well. They're dense, tightly argued, and so far they haven't communicated with me at all. Surely the most thorny or unwieldy music of Holmboe's.
Thanks for the follow-up, Jens! Perhaps they'll grow on you over time.

I've sampled a little of the 6th and this sounded really great! I can't wait to dig into these recordings.

I've got the 10th. I think it's really good overall, tho' the orchestra is a bit underpowered in places.

I haven't heard Caetani's 8th yet. Got sidetracked by Robert Simpson this week.

I've heard all of the Shostakovich/Skrowaczewski recordings with Halle now and I have to say there's not a weak performance in the bunch. Perhaps in some places the orchestra is a little underpowered, but, make no mistake, these fine performances IMHO.

Indeed.  I've done a bit of sampling and the set is certainly worth the price.
