The postman just delivered the following box set ...

That set is incredibly cheap these days..What holds me back is the thought that it might be a pioneering-but-not-just-there-yet set...kind of impressive in its time, but now outdated and outclassed ::) But I really don't know if that is indeed the case. I'd appreciate a future update on your findings. :)

Found this in the bargain bin, yesterday. Fits nicely with the Spanish Baroque theme Bill (Bogey) is pursuing these days! :) Though Madrid-based composer Giacomo Facco was decidedly Italian....

I'm sure for most here - as it was for me - the label will be somewhat of an enigma. It is called Musica Antigua Aranjuez.

Might give it a spin today. :)

I have some of this on LPs, but haven'tplayed LPs for years. This series was instrumental in shaping my interest for early music, and Andrea von Ramm to this day is one of my favorite singers!

The Karajan Ring is a great present! I especially like his Walküre.

Happy b-day, may the following year bring you lots and lots of musical joy  :)

Nico

Thank you, Nico! This is my very first Ring Cycle, so I am very excited to start listening!

Q

Historically important sets like this never really get outdated.

Not to forget that we do not know, how this music actually sounded, when it was composed.

Studio der Frühen Musik may - whatever is en vogue these days - be nearer to the "truth". Neither you nor I can tell.
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

Mozart: Piano Concertos / Barenboim 13LP EMI

Couldn´t resist this: The total price at the last day of some antiquarian sales for this apparently faultless set of 13LPs was 0,65 Euros  :o

I don´t expect that much from the set, hope to find the Anda on DG some time for a cheap price too & own Schiff, Brendel/Marriner, Han and Perahia as regards complete sets also. But judging from listening to the 15th cocnerto, the sound is good and the playing too, if somewhat subdued.

Great day. Great gift. When I got my first Ring it more or less settled the course of my life for the next two years!

Now was that hammering out the ring, or was that with the three maidens? :)
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

So excited about hearing it... I'm going to be buying all the scores too, which I have found for around £50 on Amazon MP altogether.... I think the four books together are around 2500 pages! :D

Neither of these. The chief effect was that, from that day onwards, all my conversations contained the words:
Weia! Waga!
Woge, du Welle,
walle zur Wiege!
Wagala weia!
Wallala, weiala weia!

What a great present. Happy Birthday, Pal!

Now, if my parents would give me the Licht cycle for my birthday. Not better music but more discs...

Now listening:
Mahler 1 (with lecture), Zander.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Went to the used CD store and man they have got a bunch of classical Blu-rays in so I picked these two up for $12 each:

Yes. The Weia! Waga! syndrome is inescapable, and there weren't pills for it in those days. Of course I also began to take part in the weekly street battles between Wagner and Verdi fans. But you'd have expected that.

Brilliant, John! Very good performances, I watched them on the Digital Concert Hall a while ago. I love this Takemitsu pieces, and even better, it has my 5 favourite percussionists as the soloists!

Enjoy! :D

No problems.  I may not be able to get to the set for another week or two.  But the price was surely attractive ...
