Three discs featuring Krystian Zimerman, one of my favorite pianists.

I heard all of these back when I was in college, and while it was Argerich who hooked me on Liszt PC1 and the Ravel G Major, it was Zimerman who made me appreciate Liszt PC2 and brought to life a piece I had always liked, the Ravel Left Hand Concerto. Likewise, while Zimerman/Ozawa isn't my favorite reading of Rachmaninoff's PC2, it was this recording that opened my eyes to Rachmaninoff's PC1. The Ashkenazy/Previn sounds downright pedestrian in comparison.

I assume you mean the "sound is anything but modern" ....true, but it's decent for its vintage.

I know what you mean but my recent Supraphon purchases have been a pleasant surprise, including this one (recorded in 1950/1). Maybe they've finally finally figured out how to make a silk purse, etc.  ;D  Hurwitz gave it a 4 rating for sound. I think it's better than that, a 6 maybe. Rawness describes the performance (which suits Janáček) but doesn't, to my ears, describe the sound. It's generally clean mono with outstanding clarity. There are details revealed I've not heard in other recordings. But the sound isn't important. What is important (to me) is hearing the music played this way by someone who knew the composer. Hearing that Czech tradition.

Edit: My comments about the sound apply to the Sinfonietta. I haven't yet heard the Mass.

Yes indeed: 'anything but modern'   ::)

Great choice, these recordings are outstanding.

I GOT A JOB!!! After 364 days of temping at a low hourly wage for corporate slave-drivers, I scored a permanent, salaried job working at a community college in a really great office filled with wonderful people doing terrific work. I'm moving from a cube row to an office suite overlooking a lake, and I'm also moving from my parents' upstairs bedroom to a place of my own in Dallas.

Oh and as part of my job-app process... I promised myself as a motivator that if I got a job before Presto's Harmonia Mundi sale ended, I could buy as many Harmonia Mundi CDs as I wanted, no matter the cost.

$350 later, here's what I just purchased. Definitely, positively my last music purchase of 2012, probably my last until next summer, cuz that's the most money I've ever dropped on a single order. But oh my god does it look good.
Thank heavens, this package arrived one day before I move to Dallas!
I'm gonna keep it sealed shut and leave it to be opened once I'm in my new place. :)

I got a 20 percent off coupon from JPC that was too tempting to resist.  So I didn't try to resist.

Rosetti Wind Concertos on CPO

Buchbinder Beethoven (Teldec)

Consortium Classicum--LvB Complete Chamber Music for Winds

Including the shipping charge, after the coupon and VAT deduction,  it came out to 60 Euros--which isn't very far from the price at which Amazon lists the Buchbinder set on its own.

This 16 cd set comprises the complete Beethoven and Mendelssohn symphonies, plus 31-41 from Mozart, the latter's Mass in c minor K. 427, Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice (Ewa Podles), the complete works for piano and orchestra by Schumann (Benedetto Lupo). I was very excited to hear symphoines 7 and 8 recently (recently purchased on impulse from a clearance bin). Reviews are glowing.

A recent chance listening to the finale of symphony 2 knocked me off my chair - well, not quite: I was driving.

I was bowled over by these artists' Purcell Dildo and Anus and their equally over-the-top Mozart Requiem. Telerama speaks of their 'abrasive integrity'. This greek conductor presides over a thoroughly russian ensemble. MusicAeterna is based in Novosibirsk, Siberia. Quite appropriate for that work, I would say.

Andre--
1) that Solti was my introduction to Brahms and for years was very satisfactorily my only recording of the symphonies
2) (un parole aux les sagesses) your word correction software seems to have gone a little haywire in the last paragraph of your post.....

That's one of my favorite operas. Do you know this version, André? (Left click to enlarge)

Thanks, but I think 82 recordings is enough for now. ;) I'm not going to be buying anything else until next year. I take that back, I'll probably get the new Salonen recording coming out next week, but that's about all I see on the horizon.

Finding myself unwillingly at work as a result of someone else's errors, I have bought this to console myself that the time spent has resulted in a positive gain to my life:

http://www.audite.de/en/product/13CD/21403-edition_wilhelm_furtwaengler_the_complete_rias_recordings.html

by all accounts this contains a Menuhin performance of the Beethoven violin concerto that is worth hearing.

I was wondering if anybody actually read, as opposed to just glancing at the pics ;)

Sarge, I have only one other version (Emmanuelle Haïm). I'm not a big Dildo collector  ;D. You recommend Hogwood?

Just bought these (the Sibelius was a pre-order and won't be released until next year) :):
