Yes! Ashkenazy + Rachmaninov = win!  :D

Yeah, it is a perfect combination. :) Though I've been listening to the Ashkenazy Rachmaninov set with the Sydney Symphony, which hasn't been satisfying me completely......

This set will be available on Amazon US for $24.99 on 2/5 as well, though I think those MarketPlace sellers will probably offer even better price ...
Less VAT it was a good deal cheaper on amazon.es (with less P&P as well since I'm in Europe). US amazon MP sellers also often has amazingly expensive P&P to Europe.

I can say the same for P&P to the US when I buy from the European e-tailers.  Sometimes, the high P&P neutralizes the better prices on the CD's ...

chopped and screwed, as we say in the Dirty South; DJ Slo-Böhm w/Fassbaender, Domingo, Walter Berry, Jessye Norman; apparently this one is not universally loved, but I heard an mp3 of the first movement and I needed it.

I love this one: I would say it's my second favorite version of the Ninth, except that I'm not sure what my favorite version  is (usually it's the last or last but one that I've heard).

One more item, just because I'd run across mention of it at least a few times recently.  Hat-tip Luke and others.  I will probably want to seek out some other recordings of L'ENFANT, at least; but the samples I heard from this sounded grand.

[asin]B000001GXR[/asin]
Ravel, Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky (Maazel/ONRTF)

Without prejudice to Messrs.  Ansermet or Maazel,  but the Rattle/BPO recording is a good one.

That's a great set, I guess you mean Ansermet by other recordings? I don't have that, but have heard it from Spotify or Youtube - very nice indeed. And the songs with Danco I do own - superb performances.

Haha, yes indeed, it was the Ansermet that I meant, foremost.  Is it that predictable?  Or maybe there aren't many recordings of L'ENFANT?  I have Ansermet's famous (1963) Ravel "Sheherazade" w/Regine Crespin, which I really like; so that has whet my appetite for the (earlier?) Eloquence recordings, not just the ENFANT.

Thanks for that recommendation, I will check it out.  I think I have heard largely positive things about Rattle's recordings of Ravel and also of Debussy.

Not too many, and it's Luke's favourite for the operas (though IIRC the Maazel is his second choice, not too far behind), who's on pretty much all discussions involving the opera in the forum.

And a used copy (fingers crossed) of this OOP edition...

Tchaikovsky: Symphony #6, Piano Concertos, etc [Pletnev - Virgin, 4cd]

More available in the form of two separate 2cd Virgin editions; I just did it this way to save some money.
I've heard a number of positive reports about Pletnev's concertos, as well as this #6, which I supposed to be a lot stronger than his slightly later #6 for DG.
"Inspired" by Ken Russell's film THE MUSIC LOVERS, which I did find rather terrible.  But hey, that's not Peter's fault, entirely.

I also have this collection, and trust to say, it is the best Tchaikovsky's music I have purchased. The highlight is the second piano concerto, which is original version, not the cut version favor by Gilels, and the enjoyable, salon piano music. His Pathetique IMHO is interesting with the elegant, sensitive phrasing but lacks of excitement and emotional wrench, the quality the great Pathetique must have.

Thanks, trung.  Do you happen to have a supreme favorite Tchaikovsky #6?  Aside from the Mravinsky/Leningrad/DG, that is; which is justly renowned, and which I know already.  I will probably get the Jansons symphonic cycle eventually, though for the moment, I think I don't quite need another cycle of those symphonies.

I will be interested to know what you think of those Ben Johnstons.  Not too long ago, I heard one of those string quartet discs; and if I was in a somewhat different frame of mind in terms of my current tastes, it would have blown me away, pretty sure.  I think I still have a lot of interest "standing in reserve" for Johnston's intense post-serial [?] type of music.  As for the Wuorinen/Tzadik discs, those are great!  I am actually looking forward to returning to a lot of contemporary music someday soon.

I tend to favor the subjective Tchaikovsky, so aside Mravinsky, my favorite is  Golovanov , Koussevitzky, Mengelberg in mono sound, Bernstein on DG, Gergiev on Decca . For more objective interpretation, Fricsay with BRSO on DG is also great.

....and add this to the list of ones that you will not regret.  Singing at its best....a beautiful disc.

The orchestral performance by the ORIGINAL Academy of Ancient Music also could not get any better ...    ;)

Checking again, I have in the Decca complete Ravel box that Shéhérazade, Deux mélodies hébraïques, and Trois poèmes de Mallarmé. (there are also the chamber version of the Trois poèmes de Mallarmé and piano accompanied Deux mélodies hébraïques in that box). Listening to that Shéhérazade now, thrilling performance, both Crespin and the orchestra are magnificent, and the sound, although dated by today's standards, is superb.

Serious table-pounding for the Bartók set! The rest look mouth-watering, too - the Berg set I'll probably get at some point this year. Your auntie has a good taste.

I wish I had as generous American friends aunties  8)
