I've played the The Three corner Hat, and Ma  Mere l'oye.  I enjoyed the De Falla far more than the Ravel.  I found the Ravel to be boring, but that may be because of my instrument :P  I did not care for daphnis et chloe at this point.
I must say that I am not the biggest fan of Ravel either. But, he is one of those composers where the more understanding (and information) I have, the more I enjoy his music. So next time you listen to one of his pieces, you might try researching a little bit to see if that helps you enjoy it. If you've already tried this, you can ignore my post.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

One item arrived today, a CD of Dvorak: the Serenade for Strings, Kubelik conducting the ECO; and the Violin Concerto played by George Szell protégé, Edith Peinemann, Peter Maag conducting the Czech Phil. The only thing disappointing is they didn't use the original cover photo for this reissue.

Ma mere l'oye isn't the greatest starting point, I agree. I remember as a kid being given a CD with that and Carnival of the Animals and thinking of Ravel as "the boring one." With 25 of the 28 minutes being slow and quiet, that's hard to avoid!

I changed my tune after getting a CD with the Alborada del gracioso, Pavane, and La valse. But most of all La valse! My favorite then and my favorite now, even if the Ravelophiles judge me for it. :)

I'm not a Ravelophile, but I think this is the only Ravel work (at least among the main stuff) I actively dislike. I would even take Bolero before it.

La valse is an amazing piece. All of the above are great.
I was, of course, introduced to Ravel via Bolero and I still love that work.  Actually, the only Ravel CD I own is Seiji Ozawa and Boston SO playing Bolero, La valse, Pavane, Alborada del gracioso, Valse nobles and Rapsodie espagnole.

So, I have started "round two" of classical music exploration. Music by composers I "ignored" during round one (1996-2012). I ordered these 3 discs from Amazon.co.uk Marketplace.

[asin]B0000274PC[/asin]
I don't care much about Sibelius' symphonic music but his "other" music seems interesting. I seem to like the "fairy tale" -side of Sibelius. Grieg is another composers I have ignored too much. £1.28 + shipping (used CD)

[asin]B0000274XA[/asin]
Bartok's music is weird to my ears but is that a bad thing? I can always have just one Bartok CD in my collection, right? £0.01 + shipping (used CD)

[asin]B00000141K[/asin]
Ok, I'm hungry for "string music", so I bought this one too. This CD might ease my Britten hate. £0.01 + shipping (used CD)

There is a second product page for this disc Janacek), but I am linking an ASIN for the old (?) Koch-distributed edition, which for Amazon MP-US can be had rather cheaply ($7 including shipping).

Yes, that is wonderful Britten. The same ensemble and conductor have another great string CD, with Wiren and Nielsen, that you should also buy.

And no fear, I still don't much like Bartok either.

Lots of very nice looking discs in your second post, too, Octave. The Janacek discs I'll perhaps end up getting at some point, although for now I'm content with New London Chamber Choir on Hyperion (Helios).

I believe you!  ;) In fact I was already considering that disc some 15 years ago! Somehow I never pulled the trigger with it.

Oh, not even the Divertimento (which is what I should expect to be on that Naxos CD), Brian?

Okay, I might as well end this now.  Here's hoping that Warner doesn't delete all available EMI editions in the next few months.  Cue resignation!
I might very well have wasted some time with all these ASINs, because this was a B.R.O. order.

I dislike Ravel's bolero very much, but all the rest is bread and butter to me.
