The Mad Hatter

After finally getting sick of my worthless Labtec speakers that I got in Tesco for €15 just after I got my computer:

I finally got a decent set, on which I'm now listening to *gasp* pop music. But I've got some Bach queued up.

Great bass sound from them - don't think they've got quite enough detail for me to hear Jando singing yet, but they're certainly an improvement :)

Harry

No question, better!
What brand?

The Mad Hatter

Creative. A brand I generally trust for my audio stuff.

P.S. You've made rather an extreme change of avatar there...

If sound quality is expressed on scale 0-10 you stepped from 1 to 2.  ;D

Improvement anyway.  :)
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Creative is not bad, have a matching soundcard in your computer?

Well the avatar is just for the fun of it, temporarily.

I believe I stepped from 0 to 2. The Labtecs were awful. Can't afford anything better than this anyhow, so it'll have to do.

Harry: yeah, I have...um...some sort of Creative Soundblaster somethingorother.

That's good, it will give you a well balanced sound. It is a good investment coming from them Labtech speakers, but make no mistake, they sound well enough for their price, had them for a while, not bad at all.

Possible. I have never in my life tortured myself with Labtec speakers. Even the Creative set you bough makes me feel terror. I don't know how much you paid but decent speakers are about $300/pair. People keep buying these soap boxes while they could be saving money for good speakers and listening with cheap headphone like Sennheiser PX-100 for superior sound.

Sorry for the lecture but any acoustics engineer would give you the same.

This is well enough my friend considering it being connected to the computer!
I am no technician, but I worked my whole life with high end equipment, and everything between.
So give me some validity if you will.
I heard more speakers and amps in my life as you ever will, believe me. :)

Connection to a PC is not an excuse to use crappy speakers. I recommend headphones with computers because you are sitting in one place anyway so the cord is not an issue and for $50-100 you can have sound quality superior to any "computer speakers". Even the room acoustics do not matter with phones.

I know your knowledge of High End Harry but a Creative speaker set is lightyears from proper Hifi, not to mention High End.

If someone wants good speakers with computer, Genelec 8020 is the way to go. Expensive thou...  :-\

The creative speakers are not crappy.
I heard them and found them not lacking in quality.
I did not compare them with high end, but see merit in what they deliver, that's all.
I need some small speakers to go with my computer so I will look into these ones.

Creative making quality products is new to me. I have had 2 Soundblaster soundcarts and both sucked big time. The latter does not work properly on my PC because those ignorants didn't write drivers for windows XP!

I definitely recommend you to check out Genelec speakers if you are not affraid of high price tags. Genelec financed my project when I has working but trust me, those products kick ass!  ;D

Depends on how big they are!
Because the ignorants did not made drivers does not mean that creative makes bad speakers, and that is the last I am going to say about that.

Okay, that's true. One problem with computer speakers is the fact that their frequency response doesn't go much below 200 Hz. So, the subwoofer needs to produce frequencies below 200 Hz and that makes it easy to point out where the subwoofer is resulting bad sound image.

Oke that is acceptable.
But I have near field monitors Rogers LS3 5A, and cannot connect them to my computer for they are to big, so I need small speakers fitting on my desk, just for sampling sound bites. But I am picky enough, to demand decent sound, so my friend advise, small and enough quality.
I think the Genelecs are too big, although they have there own amplification. Price is no object.

8020A is Genelec's smallest model:

Height with Iso-Pod™ 242 mm
Width 151 mm
depth 142 mm
Weight 3.7 kg
Frequency response 66 - 20 kHz (± 2.5 dB)
Maximum peak acoustic output per pair with music material ≥ 105 dB SPL @ 1m
Amplifier power 20 W (Bass) + 20 W (Treble)

Sound quality is excellent, half of studios in the world use Genelec speakers.

Excellent news, sir. I've heard these speakers before, and was impressed. I'm sure you'll enjoy them.

Were you listening to classical music on the Labtecs?

Not listening, but sometimes had it as background music, yeah.

:( I feel sorry for you...but now you've got yourself a decent enough system. Be grateful, not everyone can afford $100k top-of-the-line gear like 71dB and Harry.
