Quote from: Der lächelnde Schatten on February 18, 2025, 03:18:00 PMI'm not sure where to put this, so I'm just going to put here: today I received some rather unfortunate news from the doctor: I have Bell's palsy. The doctor assured me that this condition will go away on its own, but I have been prescribed some steroid pills and must take these over the course of a week or so. Anyway, other than this, my health seems to be 'okay' for the moment.

This came about from late Saturday night into Sunday morning, I was brushing my teeth and all of sudden, the right-side of my face changed --- pain behind my ear, numbness in jaw and an eye that will not blink. The whole of my right-side is, to be frank, f****** messed up.

I just thought I would share this with you all and tell you that I'm 'okay' and will hopefully make a speedy recovery.

Here's to a speedy and full recovery aided by the music and the other things that sustain and enrich your life most.

I hope that it clears up quickly--and stays away.

Best wishes,

@Der lächelnde Schatten I know little about this condition.  Is there anything that you can do to lesson the chances of having it?  Or is it hereditary....or???

Blimey, that must have been pretty scary until you got some professional reassurance, even then it's hardly a pleasant thing to have to go through. Hope it's over reasonably soon for you, wish you all the best.  :  )

Many thanks! Yes, it was rather alarming to say the least, but hopefully, it'll clear up in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for your concern. From what the doctor told me, causes for this condition still remain medically unclear. When talking to my parents about it, neither one of them know of any relatives who had this condition, so I have my doubts about it being hereditary.

Now that I'm thinking about this, it seems I have kind of been feeling a little off for a couple of weeks. Nothing that was worth being concerned about, but I notice I would get some headaches on the right side of my head, but I didn't have them constantly, so this is why I didn't really think much of it. But this past Saturday night, everything just kind of finally manifested itself.

Anyway, I appreciate yours and everyone else's well wishes.

You'll surely need music to cheer you up while waiting for the annoying condition to disappear. Time to try Rossini, perhaps? A buffa a day keeps the doctor away, or so they say... ;)

You might want to check out this link (Mayo Clinic).  Perhaps it might help you.

Actually, I'm finding much solace in Bach's music presently and, to my astonishment, I'm absolutely enthralled by so many of the works I'm listening to, which are mainly vocal works, but I have been listening to his VCs, Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord, the Violin Partitas and the Brandenburg Concertos.

Quote from: Christo on February 18, 2025, 03:36:47 PMAs I will be visiting Jakarta (Indonesia) in 2,5 weeks from now, I did think about Indonesian GMG members (I will even attend a concert in the Aula Smfonia in Jakarta with Mendelssohn's Second ("Lobgesang", Hymn of Praise) by the Jakarta Oratorio Society & Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra led by conductor Stephen Tong on Saturday 15 March.

I do recall a brillant, young (about 19 years old then) man from Indonesia with an impressive knowledge of e.g. Debussy and other French impressionists. I cannot recall his avatar/nick name anymore (but will recognize it when mentioned again). It must have been about 12-17 years ago. Does anyone have any clue? Is this member - now over 30 probably - still active here? Just asking.  :)
Many thanks, Chamber Nut. But no, it wasn't Novi (not active here since 2015). Anyone else?  ::)
... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

I've only just seen this John, and found the same Mayo Clinic link as @Kalevala . It sounds very unpleasant and frightening but a nerve irritation has to be greatly preferable to other similar conditions such as a stroke. I can only wish you well but would suggest you do your own research into the problem and what effect anything the doctor prescribes might have (my wife just found Yandex returns much more truth than Google). I can't see how steroids would help; it's the sort of thing I've seen our vets do in the past, a quick fix for swelling but temporary and causes further problems. Possibly even vaccine related but don't want to open that can of worms, you are clever enough to work things out for yourself. Hope it clears up soon, Steve.

Thanks, Steve. I really appreciate your concern. Interestingly enough, I did a lot of research before visiting the doctor's office. The medication that was prescribed was prednisone, which is a pretty common drug for people who have this condition. Honestly, there's really nothing that can be done to quicken the healing process. It just has to work itself out.

Speculating about the causes of Bell's palsy is distinctly unhelpful. Especially when the current situation concerns treatment, not prevention.

And frankly, someone on the internet saying that they don't see how steroids would help is neither here nor there. Because even the internet will tell you that steroids have in fact been shown to help.

Get well soon, John.

John can look at things for himself, should he so desire. :-X
