Aaagh. That SMP. That turned me off the SMP for years. Literally. I think it was 5 years before I would listen to any SMP after that trauma.  I got that set for FREE, and regretted having it!

Aha! So your Clockwork Orange "treatment" would be Klemperer's Bach!!!!    >:D >:D >:D

No, no, no.  In order for the true Clockwork Orange effect, we need him to now despise this:

Moo-ha-ha!

I wonder if there is a Klemperer version?

What are your thoughts around this large size monster Vivaldi opera box from Naive?  I am leaning towards separate releases, but would love to read your opinions.....

For $245, I would think that you want 90% of what is in that box.  Still probably cheaper, but that is a hefty tag, IMO.

Klemperer, Böhm, Davis, Szell and the likes brought down the hammer on this stuff.  Especially for Haydn.  No them, no Hogwood.....let alone all 'dem splinter light weights*. >:D

*of who I also greatly enjoy, but will take away from me getting the drama going here
For most stuff Klemperer is a favorite of mine actually. So I thought that was the SMP was supposed to be!

True, but it is "only" about $150 in the UK and a bit less than that in Germany.

Much better.

Especially for high quality stuff....for example, Mundi stuff. Worth the extra, IMO.

Yes. Omitting HIPers my vinyl collection was dominated by Szell, Klemperer, Karajan, Jochum, Cluytens. Plus Louis de Froment because Vox was cheap  :)
Of those I think I'd place Szell first overall.

See Sarge's name at the top...his Szell alarm must have been tripped.

Sarge is a Szell guy? I have noticed his taste in performances fits mine well. But, and don't tell anyone, never seen much in Barbirolli.

Clarification: Favorite Klemps.

How about a Top 10:

Beethoven Missa Solemnis
Beethoven Symphony No.6
Gluck Iphigénie en Aulide Overture
Mozart Symphony No.25
Mozart Magic Flute
Mahler Symphony No.7 (not a recommendation...it's just too weird, but I love it)
Bruckner Symphony No.6
Wagner Flying Dutchman
Handel Messiah
Haydn Symphony No.102

Sarge
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Sarge is a Szell guy?

Yeah...I grew up in northeastern Ohio. Saw Szell conducting often in his final years (including his penultimate concert, Seoul Korea May 1970).

Oh, I see. Can't remember well now but at a guess Schubert 9, various Brahms symphonies, Wagner overtures, Beethoven 6. Big romantics.
