Well, turn it up so we can all enjoy it. :)
I'll have to see if the stereo system can reach transatlantic volumes.  :)

I have my two best working on it.

Thanks again. Looking into recordings, I may stay away from the Brilliant set for now, as I have the chamber works from it and am interested in these other recordings.

Nice avatar Bogey!!   :)

Some Saint-Saens recordings I'm currently looking at and considering:

For me, Saint-Saens gets under my skin and once you turn the tap on, it's hard to turn it off. Does anyone own any of these recordings? Any opinions of them?

I'd tell you to get ANYTHING from the Florestan Trio, but that's just me and my Susan Tomes obsession. And no, I don't have that one. Yet.
Every single post on the forum is unnecessary. Including the ones that are interesting or useful.

[...]but the opera box is a bit ridiculously priced - they must sell better as single issues.

FWIW it looks like the Jacobs FLAVIO and RINALDO are both in that HM OPERA BAROQUE box.  I was a little bummed that Jacobs GIULIO CESARE wasn't included as well, but boxers can't be choosers.

In addition to the 4cd ARIAS set from HM, mentioned by North Star above, there is a similarly packaged 4cd of arias called FAMOUS ARIAS:

Hey, I knew I forgot something. That thing should be rather brilliant - particularly the Hunt, Scholl & Padmore albums.

Nothing wrong with Anthtony Marwood either.
Hyperion should release a box with all of Florestan Trio's recordings.  :)

I can't imagine you'd like the Brilliant set more than these. The three releases with Op. 1-6 also just plain gorgeous.  >:D

IMO L'Ecole d'Orphee is still the standard set for Handel's chamber music.

I would strongly recommend everybody to buy a copy of those disks (on Brilliant Classics or CRD Records).

Particularly in the recorder sonatas Stephen Preston is second to nobody.

I only found him in the flute sonatas on YT, but yes, this is nice. Egarr & co. have just the harpsichord playing continuo, so there's an excellent reason to get them both..  8)

The recorder sonatas are played by Philip Pickett.

So, I am up to four Harmonia Mundi sets to snag.  L ove this thread, but my wallet and shelves could do without it. ;D

I know it was a lack of coordination between brain and hand. I was thinking of my previous post and the Op. 1 and I wrote "recorder". I usually make this mistake because in Spanish both instruments have the same name.

That said, I was thinking of Preston.

I came across Pollini/Abbado's Beethoven concertos cycle for only 10 bucks at a local store.

Already owning Perahia, Gulda, and Gould, cycles in progress by Sudbin and Andsnes, and several individual discs of the concertos including Pollini/Bohm's 3 and 4, how badly do I need this? ;)

I hear you, Bogey!  To top things off, you even resurrected a long-dormant Handel thread too!  ;D

Here are a few Handel recordings I've been eyeing as of late:

Lautten Compagney
[asin]B0028RFCCY[/asin]

La Divina Armonia/Ghielmi
[asin]B0099MX2H8[/asin]

Parley of Instruments/Holman

La Risonanza/Bonizzoni

*Ace amazon reviewer Mike Birman makes a very compelling case for this release and the entire series in general.  Our own Octave engages him in some most excellent Handelian dialogue too (well worth the read for further recommendations).

I'm more than just considering this one.  I'm almost certainly going to download it later today.  I've already got La Ritirata doing Boccherini's Op. 34 Trios (2 discs) and these guys staggeringly good!

I find the Pollini/Abbado cycle better than the other complete options you mention, and better even than Andsnes, which is quite fine.  (I haven't heard Sudbin.)  I bought the cycle as three full price discs and thought nothing of it.  For $10, it's a steal.

Love the Lautten Compagney VERY much on other discs... like their Purcell... but that's admittedly not very specific.

Terrific. No nonsense. One of my favorite sets, alongside Pletnev & Uchida/Sanderling.

I don't know that recording but the music is lovely. Such a loss.

Has somebody listened to the Mozart's piano concertos played by Karl Engel?

I'm listening to them on Spotify and what I hear is extremely compelling.

These days the complete set is quite cheap on Presto Classical.

What do people think about Levine/Met II and Barenboim for Wagner's Ring?  Thinking of the whole av package for buying on blu-ray, so not just singing and orchestra, but the visual aesthetic as well.

Bump.  Levine/Met II vs Barenboim for the Ring.
