Do you have the day off?

the phone rings and somebody says,

Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Yes, waking up with no wind in the morning is a bless to one's surroundings!

I hope everyone and everyone's loved ones are OK.

I hope his boats make it through safely. Fortunately, my brother-in-law got his out of Marblehead Harbor and into dry dock this past weekend.

We're not even close to the heart of the storm and this is the most nervous I've ever been about a weather-related event in my life. I hope school is called off again tomorrow because I don't think I'm going to get much sleep tonight.

Good news from my In-Laws in Montauk!  House is safe, boats are still floating in the lake, & power is on!   :D

BUT, the destruction left by this storm, people w/o power, & the blizzard in the mountains just up the road from me -  :o

I'm feeling blessed. My entire property is covered with trees, branches, and leaves, but there wasn't a bit of damage to our house or anything else of value. The only casualty was a little D'Anjou pear tree that got somewhat crushed, but I think it will make it.

My wife and I were talking about getting a chimnea, so this decides it. We now will have enough firewood for a few years.

I'm glad your in-laws made it through o.k. too.

I'm glad to hear that everyone is okay especially my GMG along the Eastern coast. I'm sure there's a good bit of damage, but I'm proud to hear it wasn't as bad as it possibly could have been. Hope all of you affected by the storm find some comfort and rest in the following days.

Depends where you live though. I have a relative not too far from the Jersey shore, but hear the house may have been washed away. We're not yet clear what this means as they were evacuated, and no one has yet gotten to the site. Thankfully, everyone is ok.

I'm fine, although there is no power anywhere in lower Manhattan (roughly below 23rd Street, for anyone who knows the area) and Internet and mobile phone outages as well. Apparently Con Ed (electric company) pre-emptively shut off power in the coastal areas, and then an electrical substation exploded downtown - giving the rest of us plenty of time to be alone with our thoughts.  ;D

Spending the afternoon at my midtown office to get some work done, but then back to the "light-less grotto." Nothing against candlelight, but you never realize how much you appreciate electricity - until it's gone!

The hurricane veered north of its predicted course just as it hid land (heading for Philadelphia instead of Baltimore).  We escaped with rather little wind, but still a significant amount of water.  The bucket that serves as an informal rain gauge in the yard showed about 6 inches or precipitation in two days, which is impressive.

I wonder if anyone was playing this in the wee hours of Eastern USA last night, not the fifth, the other one.

Or Sibelius's Tempest.
Happy to hear GMG'ers did not lose anything while it was going on.  Keep the candles burning.

Oh dear Tony, I must rephrase my last post.  I am sorry some of you have lost what once was beautiful, but nature will repair all in her beautiful, evolutionary wisdom.  What a shame.  What happened to the green chair?  Is it currently situated in Montreal?  There is a blown down white one to replace it I see.    :P

No worries, John. I spent the day before the storm putting most of the lawn furniture, etc. away for the winter, so nothing was lost or damaged.  A few weeks of cleanup will have things looking fine again.

Hi Tony - I'm sure that you're relieved!  When Hurricane Hugo came through our area in the late 1980s, we lost a half dozen trees (pines), two of which fell on our house - basically did a complete re-landscaping of the property - appears that you'll be fine - great!  Dave :)

Hi Bruce - thinking about you & our most recent trip to NYC and  our extended use of the subways!  SHOCKED - I've been watching the Weather Channel for the last 2 days and the scenes from NYC are just unbelievable - hope that the Big Apple comes back quickly (as I would expect) - sorry about your situation - Dave

I'm sorry to hear that you're right in the middle of all that chaos. New York flooded--who could imagine such a thing? The Weather Channel has been on for two days; we've seen many familiar places underwater. Remember that Abe Lincoln studied by candlelight and he became President.

It is 01:54am here in Scotland and I have been listening to BBC Radio, who have done extensive coverage of Sandy.  Turns out the storm is aptly named, given that some streets in some places are smothered in wind blown sand.
However, I'm posting to say well done America, everything I'm hearing from both citizens and officials on the air is positive, even when folks know they're going to have to wait weeks until some power supplies are reconnected, tunnels are reopened, roads are cleared, etc.   It is like America is standing on its feet again after a terrible blow, and the people will not accept that it has tried to crush them.  It is most uplifting to hear people being so resolute after such a very dangerous period in their lives.
Respect and prayers for you all.

I have a good mind to hum the USA anthem and shout God Bless America! - but I may get into trouble for such actions, it now being 2.00am.   :-[
