It is getting a wee bit windy up the East coast of the USA and it looks pretty dangerous for the next day or two.
Best of luck everybody over there.

I have the day off thanks to the approaching storm. At the moment, it's lightly raining and breezy -- not unlike a normal bad-weather day in late October. This is just the beginning, though. It's predicted we'll feel the brunt of the storm here (Boston area) late this afternoon.

Well, not really the brunt up here, but tropical storm force winds, certainly. Hurricane force should hit New York Harbor by six o'clock or so.

Personal Update:

A good sized Norway maple is now lying across my back yard.

Note to self: Buy chain saw.

Hi Tony - best of luck!  We just returned from a trip to Montauk, LI (visiting MIL/BIL) - they are on high ground so the 'storm surge' will not be an issue, but wind/rain might - crossing our fingers!  Dave :)

Szykneij

Thanks, Dave. Water won't be an issue for us, but the wind gusts are scary. We're just hoping the power stays on and any falling limbs land away from the house.

Thanks, Karl.

A building a few streets away from me has a Wunderground.com weather station on its roof, so I've been keeping an eye on the anemometer readings on line.

Some of the wind gusts are hitting 50 MPH, but what's more concerning to me is the direction. Most of our bad weather comes from the west, so heavy winds normally blow away at a huge silver maple from the direction of my house. With this storm, the wind is coming mainly from the east, making for a much more troubling situation.

I have never seen such bad weather all my adult life.  For now, we still have power - knock on wood.  But the powerful wind will persist for another 4 hours ...    :-\

We've already had one power outage early this morning, and I am fully expecting more before this storm has spent itself. My sister, who lives in Nassau County, has been w/o power since this afternoon, and LIPA is advising its customers that it might be a full week before full power is restored to all.

Same here. Part of the silver maple just came down and landed between my house and the neighbor's. They lost a drainpipe and a window broke when it scraped their house, but if it had to come down, it couldn't have picked a better spot.

I hope you will all be OK. Just saw the crane fall over in NY, no doubt that will fall down.

Hi again Tony - BOY, I've been to so many of these coastal areas and I've been watching the weather station all day and really hate seeing these devastating pictures and the high tide has not been maxed out!

My 'In-Laws' in Montauk are as mentioned on 'high ground' and still have power (call from Susan to her brother a few minutes ago) - however, he owns several boats on Montauk Lake which could be lost?  Amazing how beautiful our visit to the area was just a week ago!  Dave

I hope his boats make it through safely. Fortunately, my brother-in-law got his out of Marblehead Harbor and into dry dock this past weekend.

We're not even close to the heart of the storm and this is the most nervous I've ever been about a weather-related event in my life. I hope school is called off again tomorrow because I don't think I'm going to get much sleep tonight.

I thought that communities themselves, filled with people who are neighbors and friends, volunteer and give the ol' heave-ho... isn't 'community' the American way? The Gov doesn't want people to help amongst themselves, he wants the people to depend on the State. I call both candidates 'Romama'.

'Romama',... :o,... ah, that's :-X...

I had to take a cab to work. My boss called me to say the MBTA closed at 2 PM until further notice. So I'm taking the cab and there is nobody on the road besides work crews, emergency vehicles and cabs ferrying essential personnel to their jobs in Boston.*

    * I was going to say "in the city" but that was when I lived on Long Island and "the city" always means New York City except when it means Manhattan if you live in Queens which it almost always does anyway, even of you live in Syosset.
