Great to see the Sargeant back... :)

Thread duty:

Ludwig van Beethoven: Overtures (Egmont, Coriolan, König Stephan, Leonore 1 & 2, Fidelio) - The Cleveland Orchestra, George Szell (cond.)

From the big Korean Szell box:

That's on my shopping list. Verdi and Wagner transcriptions are some of my favorite Liszt (Aida, Boccanegra, Tannhauser). How is the playing?

That's a wonderful recording of Pulcinella, Drasko (actually, the first one I ever bought--on LP). And Beranza as mezzo soloist is luxury casting ... Her "Contento forse vivere..." is a beauty!

Naturally it comes in a ultra-cheap box set now.... :)

More melodies from Melodiya:

Dargomyzhsky: Rusalka (Svetlanov)

Kozlovsky, Borisenko, Krivchenya, Smolenskaya, Miglau, Skobtsov, Tumanova

PS: Their download managing software does need some improvement: They put all tracks into one package, so when you have a multi CD set, like mostly with operas, it is left to you to guess which track "02 ..." belongs to which CD. For "convenience" they add the track duration at the end of the file name, so you can "easily" check against the track list (which is not included) where it belongs

This Szell edition and the Bruno Walter edition are quite a recurring obssesion to me; but, for some reason (not only their price), I haven't still purchased them. I need to fix this...  :)

Amazon.de sells it as well (being closer to Spain and all..)

Vivaldi: Concerti per flauto e per violoncello
Ensemble Amarillis

Exhilarating and full of stamina, exactly as it's suppossed these concerti should be played... Wonderful music.  :)

As far I can see this recording isn't available as a single CD on Amazon. But I recalled I purchased it some years ago as a part of a 4-CD set, which is still available and very cheap on Amazon:

It came out last year (I think). Now it seems to be OOP even among the Asian vendors. I guess you will have to spend all your Christmas money and a bit more.   Certainly Szell is so famous so there has to be a Szell edition in the US within the next few years..?

Well, actually you don't need to go abroad:

Thanks Gordo!  But Import.cd's "ships in 5-10 days" likely means that they do not have it and probably never will.  :(

In the past, I have ordered some items under this status from ImportCds and they have finally shipped them (after some weeks, it's true). Apparently, here many people have had a different experience; but right now I don't want to pay $250 to try.

Oddly, this box is great and frustrating at the same time...  ::) I suppose making a selection of recordings cannot be easy, particularly with such a prolific artist as Szell, but why is it we get Leonore 1 and 2, but not 3 in this box? Why Mahler's Sixth, but no Fourth or Ninth?   ???

I don't regret at all getting it, of course (I bought it really cheap in Brussels--"my" store there imported these things directly from Korea  :)), but sometimes you want to listen to something and then realize "dammit, that one isn't included"  >:(

But beware, Ken, George Szell had the highest regard for Pierre Boulez (and vice versa)... :D
