Jeffrey, how was that Staier Schumann album?
Hmmm.  Good but the Erard is close enough to a modern piano that the performance can easily be compared to any MI performer, and on that measure it does not stand out.  But it is the sort of thing that needs a few listens to properly digest.

This Vivaldi CD meanwhile is better than any CD of recorder music has a right to be.

Paging Dr. Ken. Yes, this is my music, thanks for the rec. Is this available on disc? I found this, any good?

Finally got around to giving this one a spin:

Mixed results, I think. Disc 1 is a failure: a painfully mannered account of Beethoven's last quartet, complete with horribly overdone rubati, combined with a rather uninteresting student effort from Bruckner. Fortunately, its companion redeems the set somewhat: a fine account of the second Hartmann quartet and an interesting recent effort from Holliger that will definitely repay further visits.

Glad you like it. I have listened to it many times the past couple years and this is the first I thought to mention it.  :-[ The dances from music for Wiek are outstanding too.
I have only heard the Youtube version.

That looks very attractive (and sounds very interesting in that YouTube)  :) . It's also very expensive  >:( ... I'll have to keep an eye out for affordable copies that may surface every now and then...

Here is a better deal for you in the 10 cd set ...     :)

Oslo String Quartet
FINZI: Violin Concerto   Prelude  op. 25  Romance op. 11
'In Years Defaced'  6 sings arranged for voice and orch.
John Mark Ainsley, tenor     Tasmin Little, violin
City of London Sinfonia     Richard Hickox, cond.
Finzi's concertos are quite enjoyable, I would aassociate the word 'weariness' with most of the songs

I have this one stuck somewhere on my shelves

Is she reading the score for the Boulez Repons? :D
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Listening started a little later today, but at least with something that arrived this morning, along awaited Volume III.

By the way, does anybody know what's up with Sarge? Haven't seen him around in a while.

Quote from: Brian on October 28, 2014, 04:47:30 AM
He has ongoing health issues which date back at least to 2010-11. He has good days and bad days, and because of that can't really plan things like travel in advance anymore. Mrs. Rock is also a GMG member, so if things got really bad for Sarge, I'm sure (I hope?) she'd let us know.

EDIT: A couple days ago he posted something suggesting he's gonna be really busy this week, so maybe he's just taking care of business and bazooka-ing his enemies.

Catching up with the forum after being AWOL a week, I noticed the above. My absence wasn't health related this time. We had house-guests which severely limited the time I had available to spend online. Mrs. Rock's sister showed up unexpectedly and then we had (not unexpectedly) friends from Ohio visit, friends we hadn't seen in five years, friends who selfishly demanded my complete attention ;D  I should have posted a vacation advisory, I suppose (Mrs. Rock was on vacation last week, and we spent time showing our friends the local sights).

Anyway, thanks for your concern.

We selflessly demand your complete attention.  :)  Glad you are back in good shape!
