♡ Really the most terrific cycle of this music I've heard so far. Listened through the whole set in one go. ♡

Inspired by Karl's Haydn journey....   ;)

Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 1-5
The Academy of Ancient Music
Christopher Hogwood

Every now and then I gravitate towards Haydn's earliest symphonies. There is something special about their simplicity and tonal patterns that I very much enjoy in the early part of the day.

For years I dismissed the Schoenberg orchestration of Brahms' g minor piano quartet. Not anymore, thanks to that sizzling, coruscating performance. A tour de force.

Sibelius, Symphony No 6 - LSO, Collins.

I'm running out of superlatives for this cycle of symphonies which is hidden in this fine box - simply marvellous.

Collins' cycle, which I wanted stand-alone but found too expensive in Japan, was the reason I got this set, too. Marvelous if obviously aged.

Almost as good as the Ole Schmidt Nielsen cycle, in a way, but with a lot more great competition than the latter.

Een ELF!

Risto Lauriala plays a couple of partitas, I like it, light, delicate, nuanced, restrained in terms of piano effects. I've just ordered his Art of Fugue on the strength of it.

There are a few additional benefits of the box but I bought it primarily for the Collins' symphony recordings.
Now you've got me thinking about the Schmidt Nielsen recordings - I thought I was content with what I have but I feel an itch coming on!
