Would you recommend this set, Fafner?

Absolutely. It is one of the more expensive cycles, but it is well worth it. Recorded between 1977-1984. Especially some of the recordings with the Concertgebouworkest are top notch.

Thank you. I've just been introduced to Shostakovitch and was very tempted to get the set, but being new, wasn't sure about the cost... :)

This very beautiful, new-ish recording:

A winner in both performance and price (purchased new via amazon mp for well under $8, including shipping).

I can recommend this CD by the same interpreters

Another thumbs up for this set. (I have the original recordings, rather than the box.) Haitink's approach is on the cool side (as opposed to say, Gergiev), but the straightforward, no-nonsense readings are very powerful. And as Fafner says, the recordings are excellent.

Excellent, more than excellent - and that for a HIP recording from 1974! :o

Will do quite nicely next to my favourite up to now: Anda/Fournier/Schneiderhan under the baton of Fricsay.
