Another gift from Jeffrey that has me seriously considering the 67 cd box from this artist, blimey Jeffrey what dangerous discs you send me! :)  Its 54 English pounds on Amazon. I have the Mozart Concertos already. Members around that have this box, and want to share their thoughts about it?

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

It's no accident that you felt that way, Harry, almost everything Perahia touches turns to gold. I emphatically and enthusiastically recommend the box, which at £54 it's a definite steal.

I love the Chopin, Mendelssohn and Bach on it. Clearheaded and pure is a good descrition. A fine set still at a good price I think.

I don't have the box, but I have a bunch of single discs that are included and like all of them (8-10). Not everyone likes Perahia, but I find him never less than thoughtful. I have his Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Beethoven. The DVDs look really interesting too.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

  Several of the DVDs are quite good, IMO.  The Wintereisse is with a pretty aged Fischer-Dieskau, but it is still lovely, and being able to watch with subtitles has been a great benefit to my overall appreciation of these songs.
  There is also a disc that shows Perahia rehearsing a youth orchestra from the piano.  Although not necessarily of any artistic merit, I found it really informative just to see the process of decision making and instruction that a conductor goes through as part of the process of readying a performance.
   The interview parts I found a bit awkward, but large sections (not all) of the performance parts of the DVDs are really good.
It's all good...

Harry

I found the Murray Perahia box for 73 euro's on Amazon. de, send from England, but not always sealed.
Thanks so far for all the info guys!

"Thoughtful" - that rings a bell. There are quite a few Perahia recordings I like, but after a while I often get the feeling that a bit of spontaneity is lacking, it is all SO well considered. (My favourite of his recordings are Schumann's Davidsbündlertänze, I think.)

What do you think of it, Sadko? I quite enjoy Levinas's Beethoven (on CD and live earlier this year)...I think he is a rather astonishing musician...

Listening to Symphony No. 1. All of Brahms' symphonies are masterworks IMHO. Great stuff.
