Hey Que - will be interested in your thoughts - Avison has ten opus numbers of these types of works - so far, I own Op. 3, 4, 5, 6, & 7 (on 3 double-CDs) and all performed by the Avison Ensemble; I also have the twofer inserted above, i.e. Avison's Concerti Grossi after the 'Sonatas by D. Scarlatti' - SO, guess that I'm missing Op. 1, 2, 8, 9, & 10 - see that there is a double-disc of Op. 9 & 10 w/ the same Ensemble (also above).  Dave :)

Faure, Gabriel - well, decided to just finish up listening to my collection of his music from the discs shown below - Dave :)

Trying this new addition to NML.

Though I much like Ivo Kahánek's pianism, this is not a great performance of the Martinů works; the cellist has a bit of a thin tone, and the tempos chosen for the Cello Sonata No. 3 drain feeling from the slow movement and sap the finale of a bit of its joyful exuberance. (The work overall takes 19:26 here, versus 17:27 on the great recent BIS CD with the unbeatable duo of Steven Isserlis and Olli Mustonen.)

Sticking around to see how I like the less familiar works by Petr Eben and Luboš Sluka.

This CD is made by our Choir leader in the Russian Orthodox Church in which I sing.
Compositions by Nana Tchikhinashvili.
Recorded in 2016 on location in Groningen and Scheemda, Vosbergen, The Netherlands, and in Rome, St. Joseph Cathedral, Basilica  Sant'andrea delle Valle, St Peter's Basilica, Pantheon/Tivoli.

I think this is a well conceived project, well worth listening to.

Fabulous, Harry!  Where is it available, please?

Just ask Nana in an email, she will send you a copy, I am sure.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

There is a box set of all 6 Poulenc chamber music volumes from Naxos, available at a bargain price and consistently outstanding!

I would definitely go for that if I did not have the first three discs already  :)

Looks interesting Que. I own Opp. 6, 9 & 10 and I am always interested in a composer's Op.1.

Will report back when I've been through the set!  :)

Meanwhile I bought the Avison Ensemble's recording of the Concerti Grossi after Scarlatti... 8)

This is the piece to suggest to the "I can enjoy some Schoenberg, only none of the serial works, thank you very much" set.  Très aimable.

It's an easy hit?

If the Schoenberg Op.42 lacks anything, it must be a rimshot  8)

Are you familiar with the Skalkottas piano concertos, Karl? They can be even more engaging.

Hi Andre,

Listening to the Ninth as well:

:)

I am just forming an interest in the symphonies of Bruckner.  This recording was recent purchase and even though it's not well-regarded in the Bruckner thread, I quite like it.

Is this a recommended starting point for Danielpour?  Thanks.
Wise words from Que:

Never waste a good reason for a purchase....  ;)
